LOL we live 50m from that house now.... The flood was caused by a road repair... OK, so it would've been crazy wet yes, but it should never have flooded and hasn't since they repaired the work done.
So, where to? I'm guessing not another 50m down the road. :D

Somewhere nearer BPW?
Location is either near FoD, Hopton Castle, Abergavenny. It would have to be somewhere 'quiet' for me... But somewhere near humans for Mrs Weeksy. I'm not sure the place/location we both would like actually exists, unless we had 2 houses :D

I guess something north of Chepstow so she could get on the M4 would likely be the best location as it would work for me, her and the boy.

A few years ago now we based ourselves in Brecon for a while while we checked out likely places to live. Brecon, Abergavenny, Hay-on-Wye, Ross-on-Wye. Even went up to Llandrindod Wells...didn't like it at all. I think it came down to Abergavenny and R-o-W. Preferred Abergavenny but liked the idea that R-oW was this side of the border. :D

(Did the same further north too, basing ourselves in the delightfully named Pant, and checked out the area including chunks of Shropshire inc Ludlow and Shrewsbury).

8 years, blimey.

I remember you moving in cos you were happy with the garage or something.

Iirc isn't the average move every 7 years.
Wouldn't surprise me. We've been where we are for 23 years and I'm fucking sick of the place
We are moving for the first time in 20 years - Our place sold for the asking price in hours - I cant wait to leave
We're just tidying up in order to get a valuation and have our eye on another house. Equally can''t wait.

This is my current favourite. It ticks many many boxes for me/us.... It's probably about 8 months too early for us to consider though

Those new type houses on estate developments are popular and they are great for families, we had one for twenty years, but if it's the house you intend to move to as you're heading towards retirement (and your boy leaving home) then being on a family orientated estate like that might not be the best choice, IMHO of course.

There is nothing wrong with them, it looks like a nice place, but with £400k I reckon you could find something in Wales that would suit you now, and suit you in retirement.

You could probably buy the entire estate I live on for that money :)

The house itself isn't really what you're buying, it cost a fraction of the asking price to build, it's all about location.

Our mock-tudor house would have cost over a million quid in some neighbourhoods, but in the NW you could pick one up for about a third of that.

Without being harsh, i think we'll find it easier ourselves :)

We know what we want, where we want, what we don't etc... far better than anyone else :)

Of course you do, I don't understand why you're annoyed, I was just offering a bit of advice passed on to me when we were looking at very similar properties with a view to them being our last house and living there in retirement. It was suggested (and in hindsight I think it was good advice) that those new build type family estates aren't really aimed at retired couples who's kids have left home.

I must have interpreted it wrong, I thought the "Without being harsh..." meant that you were being polite when you really wanted to tell me to shove my advice up my arse :D

I always liked Ruthin when we lived in that neck of the woods. It's a v long time ago but it still looks pleasant, got a sports centre/pool, bit of history, just about everything you need in a not-too-big place (pop. 5000ish). Good choice. :D

I like all that area, if you draw a circle from Chester through Market Drayton, Shrewsbury and all the way round to the Denbigh area then everything inside is quite nice. We used to live inside the circle and I wanted to move to that area again but Mrs Potter wanted to live closer to family.

Thinking you are about the same age as I am, so guessing you'd still have another move or maybe 2 in you after that one? Looks nice for your current life but can imagine life there as a crusty with no kids about, it would feel very different.

We purchased the house we live in currently knowing its a 10 year home for us - it's already far too big for what we need but gives us both the internal and external space to live in comfortably but can tell you now that in 10 years time I'm not going to want to maintain all the rooms and external space. We'll sell up and buy a smaller place on the coast, hopefully with a mooring, and enjoy life.

Lived in a couple of places in the zone for a few years (worked in Ruabon). In the end we moved as close to Chester as we could afford at the time. Got a bit of a shock when I looked at the Google maps satellite pics of the places we lived recently. Lots of new houses and supermarkets etc. Had a weeks holiday up there about 5 years ago wondering if we wanted to move back. Spread the net a bit wider and included Shrewbury and other places but decided not to move eventually.

I suppose with more moves in mind then it's not so critical.
I don't think I've got any more moves in me, it's hugely stressful, I don't mind swanning around the world but my UK home is "home" and moving home isn't something I fancy doing again.

We wouldn't have moved where we are now when we had a young family, the decent estates are brilliant for that, all the kids can socialise, but we didn't ever want to move again after this one and we wanted somewhere that would suit us better.

It's a decent area, close to Chester is good and there are still plenty of rural little villages, plus you've got Oulton on the doorstep.
I'm not sure how long it will stay nice though, as you said it seems like developments are growing like ivy.
