Did you know, the air quality in London is good? Also did you know the air quality issues that London has is in the London Underground?

None of which a tax has any affect on.

Distance travelled, weather, carrying boxes, books, 10kg, 25kg plus.......bikes don't suit every scenario.

I think the kid's ex-colleague lives a good few miles out. Probably close enough to cycle for young bucks like you and I, but he's in his late 50's and not in the best of health.
Living in Central London, he'd have a great bus service, but living in NW Kent (IIRC, past Biggin Hill), he'd be proper fucked relying on buses. Out that way there's no local train stations and, obviously, no tube.

Hence why many have got the arse ache with it coming out to the London border. It's the same cost, but with far fewer viable public transport options.

Could he not ask for a transfer to a nearer shop ? There's enough Halfords i'd have thought ?

He asked. Apparently there's a bit of a waiting list as his situation is replicated all over the local branch area.

I expect Halfords managers would panic if all their staff relied on £100 Halfords bikes to get to work.

Absolutely, it has zero to do with green issues. And while we were distracted the powers that be have allowed an escalation in pollution to our coastline and internal waterways, as if it hadn’t reached dismal levels already. Totally skewed, but what else have we come to expect.

It doesn’t have anything to do with green issues, absolutely. It’s about the quality of air in London and the detrimental effects it has on people’s health. With reference to earlier posts, there’s a wide range of effects of poor air quality that result in people being between ‘fine’ or ‘dead’ so the point about ‘only’ so many people died is idiotic.

These changes are inevitable and positive. It’s only the lack of funds to help people transition to cleaner stuff that’s the issue.

I do wonder why so many people can't grasp the "tax as a motivator" model, be it ULEZ or anything else.

Governments tax stuff they want to discourage, they always have. They also don't tax stuff they want to encourage (e.g. pension contributions). It's seen as a softer lever than an outright ban.

You can still drive a polluting car if you pay the £12.50. Yep, absolutely you can. Most people won't. That is what matters.

They've also banned the sale of new cars which don't meet ULEZ requirements. It's not explicitly stated as such, but that's the effect of the long standing regulation of new cars. They can't/won't force you to get rid of your old one, but they can make it unpleasant to own.

In the US, this "higher taxes mean less pollution" bullshit mostly makes life even more fucking miserable for the poorest part of society. Especially in Calizuela which has the highest % of people below the poverty line.
