Air pollution has a negative effect on a number of different aspects of human health. In London, 9,400 premature deaths are attributed to poor air quality and a cost of between £1.4 and £3.7 billion a year to the health service.

Being serious. Is there any reason that the folk this affects, can't use bikes or buses?weeksy wrote: ↑Tue Aug 29, 2023 10:06 amOr he could spend £100 on a Halfords bike and cycle in ?gremlin wrote: ↑Tue Aug 29, 2023 10:03 am Gremlinette went out for a leaving do last night for one if her Halfords colleagues. He has an non-compliant car, earns a retail hourly rate so can't afford a new one, so can't afford to carry on working.
He's applied for an out of zone transfer, but apparently so have many others.

Did you know, the air quality in London is good? Also did you know the air quality issues that London has is in the London Underground?Pirahna wrote: ↑Tue Aug 29, 2023 11:53 amAir pollution has a negative effect on a number of different aspects of human health. Distance travelled, weather, carrying boxes, books, 10kg, 25kg plus.......bikes don't suit every scenario.Yorick wrote: ↑Tue Aug 29, 2023 11:56 amBeing serious. I think the kid's ex-colleague lives a good few miles out. Probably close enough to cycle for young bucks like you and I, but he's in his late 50's and not in the best of health.Yorick wrote: ↑Tue Aug 29, 2023 11:56 amBeing serious. Living in Central London, he'd have a great bus service, but living in NW Kent (IIRC, past Biggin Hill), he'd be proper fucked relying on buses. Out that way there's no local train stations and, obviously, no tube.
Hence why many have got the arse ache with it coming out to the London border. It's the same cost, but with far fewer viable public transport options.

Could he not ask for a transfer to a nearer shop ? There's enough Halfords i'd have thought ?gremlin wrote: ↑Tue Aug 29, 2023 12:18 pm I think the kid's ex-colleague lives a good few miles out. Aha. Cheers. I have no idea about distances and travel in London.gremlin wrote: ↑Tue Aug 29, 2023 12:18 pmI think the kid's ex-colleague lives a good few miles out. Probably close enough to cycle for young bucks like you and I, but he's in his late 50's and not in the best of health.

He asked. Apparently there's a bit of a waiting list as his situation is replicated all over the local branch area.weeksy wrote: ↑Tue Aug 29, 2023 12:32 pmCould he not ask for a transfer to a nearer shop ? I expect Halfords managers would panic if all their staff relied on £100 Halfords bikes to get to work.
Re: Any London members taking up Khan's scrappage offer?
Yamaha can tell you your Fazer was manufactured at point with specifications lower than those outlined by TfL and charge you £80 for it, but you would still require it to be stamped by an officially certified test centre, which would be another £175.Screwdriver wrote: ↑Tue Aug 22, 2023 2:00 pm I had to get a certificate for my old Fazer which is well inside the Nox limit but produced before the need to tell anyone.
Yamaha charged me £80 for a printed sheet of paper I could find on Google. They also charge every single other Fazer owner the same because you need to certify each instance of a vehicle, not the vehicle type.

Absolutely, it has zero to do with green issues. And while we were distracted the powers that be have allowed an escalation in pollution to our coastline and internal waterways, as if it hadn’t reached dismal levels already. Totally skewed, but what else have we come to expect.

Who would have guessed that the path to less pollution is higher taxes... well, apart from everyone in Calizuela.

Re: Any London members taking up Khan's scrappage offer?
It doesn’t have anything to do with green issues, absolutely. It’s about the quality of air in London and the detrimental effects it has on people’s health. With reference to earlier posts, there’s a wide range of effects of poor air quality that result in people being between ‘fine’ or ‘dead’ so the point about ‘only’ so many people died is idiotic.
These changes are inevitable and positive. It’s only the lack of funds to help people transition to cleaner stuff that’s the issue.

Re: Any London members taking up Khan's scrappage offer?
I do wonder why so many people can't grasp the "tax as a motivator" model, be it ULEZ or anything else.
Governments tax stuff they want to discourage, they always have. They also don't tax stuff they want to encourage (e.g. pension contributions). It's seen as a softer lever than an outright ban.
You can still drive a polluting car if you pay the £12.50. Yep, absolutely you can. Most people won't. That is what matters.
They've also banned the sale of new cars which don't meet ULEZ requirements. It's not explicitly stated as such, but that's the effect of the long standing regulation of new cars. They can't/won't force you to get rid of your old one, but they can make it unpleasant to own.

In the US, this "higher taxes mean less pollution" bullshit mostly makes life even more fucking miserable for the poorest part of society. Especially in Calizuela which has the highest % of people below the poverty line.Mr. Dazzle wrote: ↑Thu Aug 31, 2023 11:45 am I do wonder why so many people can't grasp the "tax as a motivator" model, be it ULEZ or anything else.
