Electrical Question.

A lass we know runs a donkey sanctuary and money is tight.
Last week she ran over her 25m cable lead reel thingy. Nothing works now. And doesn't wind in or out.

To help, can I chop the lead where it goes into the reel and then reattach the cable to one of these? Then loop the cable by hand

Seems OK but leccy scares me.

Perhaps a trip to El Specsavers might be a better investment!
I was going to say something silly about water ingress to the socket.......but then I remembered where you live!

The short answer to your question is yes, what you're planning is perfectly feasible. The sockets on the reel will be toast (as you've already discovered) but the cable should be fine. I'm not a big fan of those 'sockets on a reel' thingies - the plugs normally conspire to get in the way of each other. I'm sure it's deliberate, so you don't overload the rather puny cable those things come with.

Not only that, if you leave the cable coiled and use it for a big load eg an electric heater, the cable can overheat and melt. Yes it happened to me......

Leave it in a bucket of water to prevent this happening.

I've given her my old 25m cable reel and I'll just keep her bodged one as a spare.

Ideally you'd find an old or high quality multi socket which still is held together by screws rather than clips and glue, and rewire the cable into it properly.

I found a proper female connector to do the job.
