I've always done it, only had one broken gearbox from it... on an R6 and that was because I was learning to do it on one wheelHarry wrote: ↑Mon Jun 22, 2020 1:04 pm
I used to ride like that when I was racing mx, but I used to get through a fair few gearbox rebuilds.
My 350sxf needed the gearbox rebuilding three times in two seasons.
I probably wouldn't do it again, although in mx sometimes your arms are that pumped that pulling the clutch in is something you really don't want to do.

I had a quick shifter on the track R6, but never got on with it and went back to using the clutch. Always do. Muscle memory I guess it's just a habit.

That's how I've ridden for decades and I've never had gearbag bother with any of my bikes. My BMW R90S was the only bike that didn't like the clutchless change, but that was a tractor cogbox anyway.KungFooBob wrote: ↑Mon Jun 22, 2020 12:44 pm I only generally use the clutch going up from first to second, then its clutchless all the way up to top. Just back off the throttle a teeny bit, snick it up a gear and wind it back on.
Not as quick as a QS, what with the feathering of the throttle, etc.. but essential if you take a pillion, imho, smooths the whole gear change process out.
Always use the clutch going down, with a nice little blip of the throttle, if it needs it or not

He's probably one of the most approachable guys and knowledgeable on Yamaha tech, I'm sure he wouldn't mind a call and could probably offer you a shed load of both shiny and performance upgradesweeksy wrote: ↑Mon Jun 22, 2020 1:03 pmI think that may be excessive and having you lot thinking i'm a tool with stupid questions is one thing, hassling some bloke who should be building bikes is anotherv8-powered wrote: ↑Mon Jun 22, 2020 1:00 pm May be worth a chat with all-round Yamaha legend Phil Seton? There is still plenty of fun to be had with a UP Qs only. No rolling, just pinned, infact they often work better under higher load. So hard acceleration is good fun and sounds great on road and track. Yes, completely unnecessary but fun.
Having the down Qs auto blipper would make your life easier at the end of the track straight when hard on brake, but again, its one of them.
Personally, I wouldn't bother.

I do get that it's easier in track. But in honesty i think having a normal bike may be better to start with, it's already very very different to the 690 in so many ways and i don't do 'different'Dodgy knees wrote: ↑Mon Jun 22, 2020 5:10 pm There is still plenty of fun to be had with a UP Qs only. Re: Happy new bike day.... WTF, what do you mean it's a Yamaha ???
790 was in the running more than once. But both mine and Tricky had the counter shaft seal and cam cover gasket go, they're still having same issues even on the 20s. But also I read back on some of the threads I wrote on 790 as whilst I liked it, I didn't love it. I had issues with saddle to peg position which gave me a few issues, but also, I wanted to do something completely different and to move onto a different bike and experience.
I went into the test ride expecting to not like it, to have issues with riding position, anything really, but it never happened at all, it all felt very refined, precise and lovely.
Well, until you open the throttle, then it just feels epic!

I don't know, you kinda get used to things as you must know, so stepping onto this was quite eye opening for me.

I'd have to have it on there if it were mine, but I know you know that.
Assuming its the same as the MT10s, then std Yam one is pretty good-a down QS/blipper I really am not too fussed about (unless it was a track bike I'd definitely want it if I could have it), but up QS is pretty much a must-have for me now on roadbikes.

I think then both you and Couchie need to subsidise the purchase as i'm buying it for both of youTricky wrote: ↑Mon Jun 22, 2020 10:55 pmI'd have to have it on there if it were mine, but I know you know that.

p.s. I'm thinking of a test day out on it on Sunday if you/GP are about. I'd do Friday afternoon assuming the rain is still morning too

This is what is making me think my next bike won't be a KTM. Front runners for me are a 1090, a 790 and an XSR or Tracer.
With the KTM there is a always some little niggly issue or other. Rocker arms, oil leaks, coolant leaks etc. With the Yam you could probably feed it oil/filters only and it'd run to 100k miles.
