Ive heard a couple of people trot out the old saying that "rules are for the guidance of wise men and the obedience of fools".

The first time I ever heard that was from Douglas Bader, probably his autobiography.

If you don't know who he was, why he was famous (there was a biopic too), and what initiated it all, look him up

As a kid he was my hero and inspiration to try and become a RAF Pilot having read the biography when i was about 10 ...... His middle 2 names are coincidentally my full name

I met him when I was in the Cubs, at RAF Wattisham for something to do with Battle of Britain day, he was a polite old man who came and said hello to all of us, I don't remember him walking funny.

A mate knew him (DB used to go into their business), seem to recall him saying that DB was a miserable c customer.

Funnily enough i can see both points. He was known to be enthusiastic about youngsters wanting to be involved in aviation but also known as a pain in the arse and cantankerous git when dealing with "normal" people rather than service personnel. With RAF personnel he was used to saying what he wanted and people doing it but "normal" people didnt like his abrasive and direct manner

Never got to meet him and always wanted to but have read a lot about him and seen the few bits of footage about him still in circulation

If anyone nicks the wheel while you're in a café mid-trip, how do you get home?

Derwent Visitor's Centre.

The cafe is OPEN. But with a one way system and long queues. Mind you, there usually are queues.

The peaks are heaving. It was like a summer bank holiday today. Nowhere to park a car.

Went out Thursday to a place we’d found where no one else was. Benches to sit on. Lovely and quiet. Enjoyed a picnic and a nice cup of tea. Rolled out the blanket and had forty winks after, so a great day.....except I dropped and scratched my sunglassses.

Then on the way home we ended up riding through mobile roadworks with sticky tar patches and overbanding everywhere. Couldn’t avoid it. Got home. Bike covered in tar, so had to dismantle loads of it and to top it off we found a 1” screw in the rear tyre. So a tarred bike, rear tyre couldn’t be plugged so had to have a new one and sunglasses need replacing. Expensive day out. Wish we’d stayed in!!
