Would you buy a used MV Agusta?

Post by bevvo »

I've been slightly swayed by some of the discussions on here suggesting that you should buy a bike that moves your soul, not just you arse.
I mean I always buy bikes that I think will have a bit of magic but I also consider reliability, parts availability etc. So Japanese, Triumph and even Aprilia. But now I have a bit more spending power, maybe I can look for something more desirable and exotic.

So I've been looking at used MVs. Something like a 800 Brutale of 2015 vintage in very tidy order can be had for 6-7 bags of sand.

E.g.

But would you?

Having owned a 2nd hand bike made by MV Agusta I'd be a bit wary, I had a 2002 Husqvarna 610, lovely bike to ride, but I had to strip it down and out it back together properly to stop bits falling off. I hope the more main stream bikes are better put together than that was, but I would be cautious.

My nearest bike shoppe is an MV dealer, I think I'd want a specialist within a reasonable distance if I were to own one.

The 800s are triples, and are well worth wanking over

I tend to fix my own bikes but you need to be able to source the bits. Plus, do i really want to be replacing warped fuel tanks at (guessing) £1k a pop...

I don't think you'll have any trouble getting parts, my Husky was the easiest bike I've had to get parts for, sadly I needed a lot of them.

To my mind that one you linked to is one of the best looking bikes out there. Well worth owning. Get it bought.

I bought a 2010 Brutale 990 about 3 years ago, kept it for 2 years and 6000 miles. It's the IL4, not the triple. Nearest dealer is a hundred miles away but I can't remember the last time I used a dealer, I'm prepared to tackle just about anything and the workshop manual comes with the bike. Service items are readily available online and are reasonably priced.

In the time I owned it, apart from service items I had 2 mechanical faults:

1) a clutch slave cylinder seal failed and was replaced for pennies,

2) the rear hub bearing developed a bit of play. MV say that you have to replace the hub as a complete unit at a cost of £ hundreds. Someone on the MV forum does an upgraded replacement which is still £several hundred. I sourced the bearings and replaced them myself for less than £60.

I'm fine on one (apart from the triangles of pain) and I'm an optimistic 5ft 8, probably less than that now as I've started shrinking with age.

It had sold before Mrs Weeksy pulled her finger out.

Undeniably desirable and exotic. But its out of range, budget-wise and a bit too race-rep for me. I prefer bars rather than clip-ons, and less fairing.

Shame. It looked tasty.
