As i said on the Friday post I had a little accident at work a week ago today, in fact a week ago right now I was in A&E, maybe the eye clinic at this point. To say I am a little bit fucked off is an understatement, completely self inflicted, nobody to blame but myself, just a lapse in concentration.

The day itself was a bit of a fuck up from the word go with regards to the weather and the boss being all over the shop with delegating jobs, chopping and changing his mind which was throwing me off a little, so many things in my mind needing doing and not being able to get them done in the time frame that I would like.

I was cutting the paddocks on the Kubota BX2350 when I came by the workshop and seen one of the workers who was out in the Massey Ferguson 5420 tractor cutting large areas, it had the front mounted TriMax Stealth fitted and the rear tow along TriMax Pagasus. He was at the workshop because he was trying to replace a spring which had came loose, it’s a very heavy duty spring that solely aids in the cutting deck lowering and raising, it works perfectly fine when it’s not in place but I always replace it when it comes loose. I’ve replaced it many times including other springs through my working life and have specific tools for doing the job and always do it in such a way that it never puts myself in danger, except for this time.

For whatever reason I did it differently this time, if anything were to go wrong I would potentially be in the way, another mistake was I was using the two piece spring hook tool that I have, it would not have been my choice but it was the one they had grabbed from my tool box and were using when I had arrived, so stupidly I used this tool instead of my usual go to one piece. Another stupid mistake was not wearing eye protection, I started to force the spring back into place when it all went wrong, in a split second there was an almighty force to my face, I went down to the ground but I was not knocked out, I wasn’t even dazed if I’m being honest, I was always fully aware of what was going on and the immediate pain was quite bad. My initial thought and worry was how bad is this going to be, how bad is my eye going to be and whilst I’ll was lying on the ground I could see the handle of the tool I was using just laying there, the tool had failed. It had clearly failed whilst trying to get the spring in place leading to it all going horribly wrong.

I couldn’t open my eye initially, there was already brushing to the eye, eye lid and surrounding area, my cheekbone had taken a fair impact as well. I was taken to A&E where the eye was inspected initially, there was bleeding within the eye and a scratch to some degree on the eye itself. At this stage I couldn’t really see, initially I couldn’t see then it got to the point where I could just see shapes, it was very cloudy, milky looking. I was told this was due to the blood build up. I was then moved to the eye clinic within the hospital where they tried to get pictures of my retina, they were struggling due to the blood but they were positive they could see enough of it to determine that there were no issues with the retina.

I was discharged 5 hours later with 3 different drops to take, I was asked to go back two days later for a check up. My sight gradually got better out the left eye but it was still blurry, at the check up they were able to see the retina better and confirmed it was absolutely fine. As for the blurriness they told me that was still due to some blood within the eye and the pupil being dilated from one of the drops, they are convinced that it should go back to normal, the only concern would be pressure and that I might need drops for that in the future.

So we’re now one week on and the sight out the left eye is much better but it’s still blurry, if I cover my right eye and look at words it’s blurred, what concerns me is I haven’t had any drops for a few days now as I was told to stop them and my pupil is still dilated, I have a sneaky feeling that it won’t return to normal and I will require glasses but I suppose I’ll have to be patient and see. I have to go back in 6 weeks for a check up so I’ll know more then but I’m hoping the pupil will go down and the blurriness goes away.

I’m signed off until next week, I’ll be going back on Thursday. I have a few other jobs to do just now at the golf course to keep me going, and at an estate where I look after the machinery. I was strictly told because they know what I’m like that I can’t go in and work when I’m signed off, I was at the racing on Sunday there purely as a spectator, it was good experiencing it from that point of view, but I can’t wait to be back at it.

Hope it turns out all good.
Had a week in hospital after priming a tank pump and getting sprayed in the eye by some plating solution, 10 percent sulphuric plus various other chemicals. Waiting in a&e for 1/2 hour before they washed my eye didnt help. Main reason i need glasses now tbh.

Hope you get back to 20/20 Wull...or pretty close. It'll take time for that blood to clear but AFAIK the pupil should stop dilating. Even if you have to wear specs it's a better result than it could have been!!

We've all done it. A moment's inattention,then repent at leisure.

The brain is great at compensating. As an apprentice I took a bit of hot,sharp swarf to my left eye which left my vision ever so slightly blurred in that eye. I don't even notice it now and at nearly 71 I still don't use glasses for reading.

Think positive Wull,you'll get there man.

It happens, whether it's complacency or short cuts, we've all done it. My mate worked in a wood yard. Been doing it years, then one day he chopped his thumb off. Got a bit casual he said, his own fault.

Think yourself very lucky I say, GWS.

I suffer or suffered Iritis. I say suffered as it not flared up for a good eight years. One of the drops i took also made the eye dilated and if its any consolation it would take four or five days to start looking normal after finishing the drops . Not that i ever remember getting a smack on the eye but it is a reason why it could flayer up.

In a side note, having had a scratched cornea, don't ask if you get a free Labrador. Those people do find it funny.
