I use a proper sat nav and a Tesco mobile. Sat nav doesn't cost (but has its own issues) and Tesco mobile gives 'free' roaming.

I have a tenner a month contract with Talkmobile which covers you anywhere in Europe for no extra charge. It worked well enough in Prague a couple of years ago.

o2 (tesco use o2) does free roaming packages for europe. Data wise it's always worth preloading your maps onto your device before you go.

This. Plan your routes before hand, download to phone, download the map tiles, and turn off 4G when you hit the ferry.

OK, you won't get the re-routing ability, but the software on the phone can run your pre-saved routes (iirc), most of the 4G data you burn through is downloading the maptiles (the background imagery).

Have you had a chat with your mobile network provider? What was their offer?

I use a satnav so I don't have to worry about data charges but while travelling Europe last year, I got whatever the deal was from my provider, not the cheapest but it was hassle free.

Most UK companies allow free data - but only up to 4gb.
Or at least they did for me.

The IOM crucify you for mobile costs if you don’t have a local SIM.
I have no idea of a Euro wide eSim but try the usual suppliers
