There's very little choice of wardrobe over here and a bespoke one was touching 3,000€.

So decided to build a carcass myself. My carpenter pal Hippy will fit the doors.

The wall is 3.27m so decided on a 1.2m wardrobe each side and a shoerack or makeup mirror in the middle.

I've never done anything like this before so complete trial and error.

I built a frame onto the first bottom board so can join the 2nd board later. And keeps it off the ground.

We both wanted a hanging rail and set of drawers and long hanging space.
We already had sets of drawers so used them.
And to keep the whole thing upright, I screwed the outside upright board to the drawers. Instant stability

Just built one half to see how it goes. Then will slide this one into place and build another and do the middle bit last.
I made loads of beginners mistakes, but persevered and it stands unaided

Building your own carcass is a bold move for a first-timer, but getting the stability right with those upright boards is key.

In our case we looked into doing a DIY build too but ended up going with The Heritage Wardrobe Company because I wanted that professional hand-painted finish without the trial and error. It's a huge project to take on solo, especially with 3.27m of wall to cover.

I did similar when I "built" my kitchen, as this house doesn't deserve 10ks worth of artisinal bespoke kitchen I feel your pain. Buying straight wood from DIY stores seems to be more and more difficult and my "cutting straight" skills are just as woeful.

Curiously, all the wardrobes in the world seem to have migrated to France - every single secondhand shop has hundreds of them. There must be a dozen or more in our house - and I still have nowhere to put anything ...

Carcass finished. Just waiting for Mrs T to decide on doors. Waiting for quote for ceiling mounted sliding doors
