With my maths:Saga Lout wrote: Wed Jul 16, 2025 4:04 pmBut 46mph in a 40 limit on the M4. Whatever happened to 10% plus 2 mph?![]()
40 +
+ 10% = 4
+ 2
= 46
Which is what she was nicked for.
It's the threshold for being nicked, not for turning a blind eye.

Long gone, something to do with legal requirement of speedo accuracies from manufacturers etc?Saga Lout wrote: Wed Jul 16, 2025 4:04 pm In the same article: Zoe Wanamaker was also fined and banned for speeding, also with 9 points already on her licence. + chances are her speedo was reading 50-ish. IIIRC the rule for manufacturers is speedos must not under-read but can over-read by up to 10% so they all err on the side of caution and they tend to over-read. I think every vehicle (2 and 4 wheel) I've had has had a slightly optimistic speedo (when compared to a GPS) by between 5 and 10% - but not necessarily totally linear across the range. I'll often do limit+10% indicated but she was probably looking at limit+25%.

Met say:
https://www.met.police.uk/foi-ai/metrop ... hresholds/
Q1 - What are the Met's speed camera enforcement thresholds (tolerances)?
The Met’s speed camera enforcement threshold is 10% + 2mph.
The Met observes the current NPCC guidelines which states that enforcement action should commence as soon as a speed that is at +10% +2mph. This is normally the minimum speed at which enforcement is undertaken in all speed limits. The minimum speed at which a speed camera is operated may be varied at any time but there are no plans to use a threshold that is not contained in the current guidance. NPCC guidance also states that whilst tolerances exist, they do not and cannot replace police officers’ discretion.
FWIW, Byker28i, of Visordown, was nicked for 41 in a 40.

My speedo is pretty much spot on. When I check my dash cam video, the GPS speed matches my cruise control speed to within 1 mph. I.e. Cruise control set to 70, dash cam records 69 or 70.Count Steer wrote: Wed Jul 16, 2025 5:07 pm+ chances are her speedo was reading 50-ish. My & Filly's car are both accurate according to a couple of local SIDS, under-reading by 2 mph according to a third.Saga Lout wrote: Wed Jul 16, 2025 5:52 pm My speedo is pretty much spot on. There can be lag on dash cam speed displayed. I've had '4 mph' showing briefly when stopped.

Haven't really looked at this on wife's 2025 car. Maybe speedos have got better since my car was built a few years ago (in Germany).

I'd question why the fuck there was a 40mph limit on a motorway??Saga Lout wrote: Wed Jul 16, 2025 4:04 pm In the same article: Zoe Wanamaker was also fined and banned for speeding, also with 9 points already on her licence. I was in a 40mph limit on the M1 on my way home tonight. Smart Motorway, first slowed everyone down to 60, then 40 because junction 36 traffic was queuing into the 1st lane.ZRX61 wrote: Wed Jul 16, 2025 7:27 pmI'd question why the fuck there was a 40mph limit on a motorway??Saga Lout wrote: Wed Jul 16, 2025 4:04 pm In the same article: Zoe Wanamaker was also fined and banned for speeding, also with 9 points already on her licence. Re: In todays light hearted look at the (non-political) news
All this has reminded me that I got the double-flash just after joining the M42 13 days ago whilst, very foolishly, heading back to Cheshire when the boat had let us off in Portsmouth at a quarter to nine in the evening...
The M40 had been hateful at the top end, plus it was getting late and I still had a chunk of the M6 to look forward to in summer gear, plus I hate motorways, so I was pressing on when I got some clear air on the 42...
Fingers crossed for nothing in the post tomorrow

I've been nicked for 34 in a 30. I was driving a BMW so I probably deserved it

That happens here, people just move over to the shoulder, it's not rocket surgery.KungFooBob wrote: Wed Jul 16, 2025 7:31 pm I was in a 40mph limit on the M1 on my way home tonight. Smart Motorway, first slowed everyone down to 60, then 40 because junction 36 traffic was queuing into the 1st lane.

Re: In todays light hearted look at the (non-political) news
Our hard shoulders are only for emergency use. They need to be kept clear for the “emergency” services. And people need to be warned if L1 is queueing (sp?) ahead, hence occasional 60>50>40 limits. Sensible/simple as long as they’re used appropriately, which may not always be the case.

A nerd notes (it's worth knowing too):
- a speed eg '50' with flashing amber lamps is advisory
- a speed in a red circle is mandatory
- speed cameras are either:
- HASECs, yellow, usually mounted on a bracket on the left of a gantry
- above individual lanes, on the gantry
- a speed eg '50' with flashing amber lamps is advisory
- a speed in a red circle is mandatory

From what I understand, whilst only advisory, it can be taken in as a factor if the police pull you over for something else or you are involved in an accident.Horse wrote: Thu Jul 17, 2025 11:39 am A nerd notes (it's worth knowing too):
