One for the road...have to go and pick up more yogurt weaving supplies.

Montague's works are a testament to the symbiotic relationship between form and function, infused with a sense of narrative authenticity. Hailing from Speke, this master of macramé fuses traditional techniques with a bold and modern aesthetic, creating pieces that embrace the liminal space between art and design. Each intricate knot and delicate twist speaks to a deeper story, inviting viewers to explore their own interpretations and unravel the depths of Montague's craftsmanship. From elaborate wall hangings to functional yet stunning home decor, Montague's art commands attention and commands the viewer to enter into a realm of true artistic expression.

Actually, I don't think the site I used is a spoof!!

I know someone who, after redundancy/retirement, took up pottery.

Equiped the garage with ... stuff ... and a kiln.

Now flogs stuff on Etsy, including some to the USA.

Through my work, I strive to authentically capture the essence of the human experience. My chosen medium of weaving serves as a metaphor for the intricate interconnection between individuals and the world around them. Each carefully crafted thread weaves a narrative journey, exploring the complexities of emotions, relationships, and identity. As a Guildford-based artist, I draw inspiration from the natural beauty and rich history of this charming town. My pieces transcend mere aesthetics, inviting viewers to delve deep into their own inner truths. I am humbled by the opportunity to share my artistic vision with the world and to spark meaningful contemplation and dialogue.
...
That's uncanny. It's almost word for word what my granny said about her time as a weaver in the Lancashire cotton mill. (Just replace Guildford with Burnley, obviously.)

Weird.

My wife's relatives that worked in the Lancashire cotton mills mostly said 'pardon?' and could lip read. They all had damaged hearing - it was a very noisy business. :(

Definitely not happy but properly made me laugh -

out learning routes today with a couple of other drivers and an instructor. One of the other drivers is a fellow student from my course and he's "interesting" - manipulative, interested only if it suits him and basically, despite being essentially married, he's the biggest slut and says all men want to shag around cos, a change is as good as a rest, or something like that   (tried desperately to fix me up with another guy on the course and when I said no, he asked why not himself!! Whilst chatting up any other woman that was around cos at least they spoke better french than me   )

Anyway, he's a bit patronising but I generally ignore it. But he commented on any fit female we saw, then, just before we got back to the depot we passed some roadworks and there was a very fit 20 ish years old girl manning a digger.

Tim's neck nearly snapped as he turned to keep her in view as long as possible   Then he said stuff, like " it's so cool to see women and girls doing things like that, driving diggers, lorries, I mean we have Charlotte driving with us , and Noggin, but it's so cool to see women finally getting to do jobs like this

He managed to forget Valerie who is my age and so took her coach licence over 30 years ago and then her lorry licence and has been driving coaches and HGVs for work since (she's really pretty, but doesn't count cos she's not 25  )

I was just laughing a lot. He said, why are you laughing.

I just said, women have always done these jobs, they've always been able to , in the war, who do you think did ALL the "male" jobs, then when the men came back and the boys got old enough to take the jobs back, women were relegated to the kitchen and home again. The instructor was nodding and saying, it's true (he's quite young but not a sexist tosser like Tim!!). I started driving buses when I was 20 (I forgot to mention Valerie at that point - a mix of laughing at Tim's face cos I was disagreeing and generally laughing at his view of life!!).

I pointed out that virtually all the very early software designs were by women, computers were originally designed and used by women - it's not that women can't or couldn't do the jobs, it's that because women were the only one of the sexes that could get pregnant, men could sideline them back to the home when the job/creation proved to be money making !!! (Did you know brewers were originally women, but once men realised that money could be made - all change!!! The witches hat was actually a brewers hat!!)

Anyway - it made me laugh a lot because the other driver and instructor were agreeing with me and the instructor even commented how patriarchal French life especially is (in comparison to English, he thinks) - Tim ended up not saying anything more and changing the subject !!

He so does not like to be contradicted    Normally he wouldn't talk to me for a few days, but he's on holiday till monday so I expect he'll have forgotten by then !!

When you walk away from the deal you've been offered because you didn't want to concede any further.

30 minutes later, you're wondering if you maybe shouldn't have been so stubborn. Then they come back to you and agree to the deal on your terms.

Clearing out for an office move, I've found my old copy of the Viz Profanisaurus Magna Farta edition.

So non-woke, offensive, crude and puerile, but bloody funny. I'm sat here sniggering.

That Charlotte Babbage, what a babe. And Alice Turing, she was a looker.

Women were involved right from the beginning, e.g. Ada Lovelace, but to say women designed them is a stretch. Or revisionist.

Ok, maybe I've overegged some of it. But some women did invent some parts of various systems we use now that would have been delayed if the girls hadn't been around to invent   :bblonde:

Hedy Lamarr is one amazing example - essentially the basis of wifi, invented/designed by someone the world only sees as a beautiful actress (probably TL;WR !!)

My local health service/surgery. (Sometimes :D ).

Dropped in for an appointment this morning (just to get a blood sample taken for some tests). Got seen 10 minutes early  Although the Doc hadn't requested it I asked, as they'd got my claret, could they do a cholesterol test? 'Sure, I'll add that, no problem'.

Dropped a set of home BP readings in at reception after. By the time I got home I'd got an email saying thanks for the new readings and a review of progress.

Pretty good service.

Waited until it was cooling slightly, then off to local woodlands to walk the dog.

This 'un had a look at us, then went back to munching. Incredibly trusting!

Didn't know this little factoid until the missus asked me a question about something but, apparently, Babbage was inspired to create his Difference Engine after seeing a Jacquard machine which used (some still operating) punched cards to control a loom.

There are woven silk portraits of Jacquard on Wikipedia that used 24,000 punched cards.

You have no idea how hard it is to get all the various bureaucratic departments in France to accept a change of first name.

And often they change the first name on the ‘surface’ but still the important documents are in the old name

(Surnames are slightly easier as you have a “name used” box and that seems to track better - maybe)

I’ve been battling for a few years and had a win last year when the tax office seemed to accept my first name (still think it’s in the background somewhere tho 🙄)

When I started my new job they wanted my attestation des droits for the health care. So I duly downloaded it only to find that, despite everything else (including my health card) having the correct name, the back systems still had the old one 😬😬😬

Just got confirmation and checked that this is updated -

My attestation des droits now has the correct, and legal, first name
