In further tree news... the trunk turned out to be very rotten indeed and the risk of it falling the wrong way was large enough that they had to take it down in chunks...

The ringed areas in this picture of the cross section half way down the trunk so the living parts of the tree, the rest is water soaked rotting wood.

Most of what is coming off is rotten and much of it can be crumbled by hand. Very glad we got it looked at when we did.

Taking the roof off was a lot of work as it was tiled, there was roofing felt, osb board and then some kind of plasterboard or particle board on the inside...

I need to process it all when I have time. There's a pile of branches that can be used in the wood burners when seasoned. The rest will either turn to sawdust or I'll dry it out to use in the fire pit in the summer.

This is what the stump looks like after the dogs decided to dig the right side of it out one afternoon. It's just dust. I can't believe the tree hadn't fallen down before now.

I've not separated and braced the part that will stay and be used as a wood shed and pretty happy with it. At some point the roof will have to come off and be redone as it's pretty rotten but the supports are sound so that's for another day.

I pulled up all the floor boards which took ages as they'd used a million screws presumably because they didn't trust gravity.

I now need to pull all that partly rotten OSB up and then the joists. Then I find out what's underneath it and work out what to do next.

Fortunately the pea gravel gets delivered in a big 800Kg bag and the building comes in kit form so will (hopefully) go in the garage.

The only expectation for completion is that I've nominally agreed that it'll be built by the end of April so that he can run power to it. He's flexible though and he has a couple of other jobs for us to do this weekend in terms of prepping the supply in the garage with a bigger consumer board, putting up some 13amp and a 32amp socket in the garage and replacing the main consumer board in the house with something more modern.

Mainly I just want to get it complete so I can wrap up a couple of the bike projects I have waiting and maybe start on the car engine swap I have planned.

Last piece of demolition done this afternoon and the next step is to build the base of the new office which was all delivered this morning.

Been busy recently but got a lot of the base down. Just a couple more rows of the base pieces and gravel to go and then I can start building. Should have the base completed and start building next weekend, weather willing.

The new garden is level so I've ordered Dunster House's new system of grids that cover all of the base that you fill with pea gravel to spread the load. I need to work out a way to get this level with the concrete or just take out the concrete. Doesn't look too difficult though.

I've got that stuff on my drive at home. It means I can have a crunchy crunchy gravel driveway that I can park on, but it all stays put and the ground doesn't end up with two tyre tracks where you always drive. You can't even see the grid unless you know it's there and look for it specifically.

There's quite a few different versions of basically the same idea but they're all working towards creating more porous built up areas that lessens flash flooding and preserves groundwater levels.

Just firing a load of concrete seeds down allows rainwater to flow off too fast and flood rivers, or when its dry the rivers dry up quickly and the ecosystem suffers.
More porous cities and so on alows the ground to act like a sponge and soak tain up during wet periods and release the water slower.

Yeah our new factory (at my old job ) had the whole car park done in it and all the roof drains ran into it. It meant the whole site had the same drainage footprint as the greenfield it was built on.

Some of them have a massive underground water tank.
I really would not want to fall into one of those.

They use that kind of design here to construct filter systems for ponds/water features. They fill the crates with something that looks like those little balls with loads of holes like your grannies budgie used to play with. Some organism or other moves into the balls & cleans the water as it passes through on the way back to the pond.
