Not totally insignificant, but t'other 'alf was telling me yesterday that he's going to plan a long weekend trip to Italy on bikes with me (and possibly a couple of other mates of ours).
This is quite a big step for him, life's a bit complicated right now and this is the first time he's suggested making any plans

Gremlinette's back for a visit.
She wants to do family things tomorrow. It'll never happen, she'll get a dozen better offers and we won't see her til Sunday, but that's fine.*

Garda is lovely, but give Lake Orta a look as its often overlooked but, trust me, it is a gem. Much less touristy. Nice hotels in Orta San Giulio, which is the main town. The other lakes and Turin are an easy ride away.

Hotel Leon d'Oro.
There's a wine bar next door that does the best meat and cheese platters and bottles of franciacorta for very reasonable prices, overlooking the piazza. We spent many a fun hour there, just stuffing our faces and watching the very civilised world go by.

Re: Insignificant Things That Make You Happy.
After years of playing russian roulette trying to produce perfectly boiled eggs to dip soldiers into (runny yolk, fully set white), it's finally occurred to me that I can dip soldiers into poached eggs instead.
And unlike boiled eggs, I'm good at getting poached eggs right.
I've had poached eggs with soldiers soooo many times in the last fortnight. Game changer.

Boiled eggs are 6 minutes into a rolling boil. Then 3 minutes in an ice bath, or full sink of cold water. Job jobbed.

Re: Insignificant Things That Make You Happy.
Foal has moved out of our house.
Not happy about that specifically, but because he's starting a PhD and has moved into a flat which he'd only seen in a video call but that actually exceeds expectations - and is cheaper than he'd budgeted for.
All falling into place for him. Proud and pleased parents

Re: Insignificant Things That Make You Happy.
Got one, it's great for hard boiled, but I'll often get one dippy egg, and one overdone. Or one dippy egg, and one with a snotty white. Done in the same pan for the same time. I don't think I'm precise enough for this methodTaipan wrote: Sat Mar 08, 2025 11:52 am Boiled eggs are 6 minutes into a rolling boil. Then 3 minutes in an ice bath, or full sink of cold water. Job jobbed.![]()
Apparently so. But my never-fail method is simple and ridiculously easy: one minute in a simmering, almost boil, (in an inch of water - I use a frying pan) then turn off the heat and leave to sit in the water for ten minutes.Mr. Dazzle wrote: Sat Mar 08, 2025 12:03 pmYou must be the only person in the universe who has it this way around.Sunny wrote: Sat Mar 08, 2025 11:34 am And unlike boiled eggs, I'm good at getting poached eggs right.
Perfect poached eggs, zero hassle, low energy consumption, plenty of time to sort out toast etc.
