FFS Jody!!! I've told you already, ditch the bloody FUF crown - it's bad enough for those used to it, but I think you need to send it back now as three times is enough

We do have a guy with only 1 arm, so we've lost already.

Automated calls that are conversational in tone, pretending to be real people.

I just had a call that went thus:

"Hi my name is David from wherever windows and doors. How are you today? All good?"

I give it my standard test reply " I'm fine thanks. How are you?"

'David' fails the test "The reason for my call..." Click...brrrrr.. as I hang up.

A real person would have replied along the lines of "I'm good thanks. The reason for my call..." but the automated systems don't allow for that. I'm guessing at some point AI will be employed to mimic that sort of thing much better.

My favourite response is 'Hello, who are you calling?' If it or they don't know, *click* .

(Not that we get many but the automated dial stuff is getting a bit more frequent).

I get a lot of autodial spam calls that just hang up as soon as I answer. I'm not sure what they get out of it. :?

I think those ones are automatically putting out calls and when answered then they are connected to an agent. If no agent is available they hang up.

The only thing I can think of is that they create a list of numbers that get a response then sell them on to other spammers who save time not dialling unresponsive numbers.

Particularly useful for confirming stuff like ex-directory lines, maybe.

(At our previous place, my wife's employers put a second, business, line in and we didn't get a single spam call on it. We went ex-directory on the home line and that eventually reduced them too so we did the same when we moved. Now, I guess it's just autodial crap that gets through).

That ^.

Just dial every number, see which ones pick up.

I can't believe you people actually answer the spam calls :D

I don't answer any calls, I let my voicemail screen them.

Also, my phone Googles the number and tells me who it is within 3 seconds of it ringing.

If the voicemail kicks in is that counted as an answer? 99% of phones have a voicemail attached to them so in effect if we answer or let VM answer the scammer thinks it's a good one, possibly lol

Only when they spoof the number and it looks local so it could be the optician or a neighbour etc but my phone usually comes up with 'Nuisance?' for most.

No-one I know would actually call me, like some kind of cave man. ;) Not even my Mum.

If my phone actually rings its almost certainly spam.

I've had my landline unplugged for the last two years as the only calls we ever got (caught by the answer phone), were spam auto-diallers.

I plugged it back in at the weekend as an experiment to see if we've fallen off their lists 😆 inspired by the fact we got a new EE router recently which came with some kind of digital phone adaptor thing.

I was filling out a fixtures and fittings form for a house sale recently and the 'telephone receiver - included / excluded / not present' question felt very, very archaic.

I was told it's good for your credit rating. Only reason I've kept it.

I can only get FTTC at the moment, so I have to keep the land line a little longer... when have BT got the end of copper slated for?

Never heard that one!

I don't have landline but I have a perfect credit score, so I must be sufficiently boring via other routes.
