Cordless Power Wrench/Rachet

I keep watching those short little videos the Friendface algorithm feeds you.

All the vehicle maintenance ones seem to involve someone using a battery powered ratchet.

So far they've all been red, so assume they're Milwaukee ones, something like this...



So now I want one.

Anyone got one, do they have the torque needed for most jobs, or would you be better off with proper impact driver (unless clearance is an issue)?

Compressed air ratchets are also available in red, but probably don't qualify as cordless...

A friend has one. Cant remember exact but it is under 100Nm but came in handy doing the top bearing in my van and getting in to take the wing off to allow me to change the door. The battery is different from the drill ones but at least the charger does both types.

When I was at Portimao, they used a Makita 18v jobby to take the sprocket nut off. No need to hold the rear brake.
Just whizzed it off.

I have both the Milwaukee impact gun and wrench. Unfortunately I haven’t used the wrench yet so can’t really help. It does seem pretty powerful but I’d get the impact gun first and then the wrench unless you know you won’t have space to use the gun.

The quality of the Milwaukee stuff is superb by the way.

TBF Makita are a close 2nd, well apart from the drills. My rattle gun, impact driver, angle grinder and circular raw are excellent but sadly i killed two drills. I was told the gearing was made from plastics and my two fucked up when using the hammer so probably correct. I went to Milwaukee for my drill and happy as a pig in shit so far but never used it for much hammer work drilling in the six month i have owned it so time will tell.

Milwaukee were quite respected until the cordless rattle gun debacle where they replaced the amazingly good one, with one that is made from cheese.

Treated myself to a £26 no name Makita copy before Xmas. Managed to undo the top nut on a MacPherson strut, which is what it was bought for. They claimed 540nm, but it won't touch the merc's wheel nuts (210ft/lb).
Would hope that a brand name tool would have been tested to claimed figures!

They do look handy, especially for getting into tighter spaces. I just looked at the De walt ones as that's the batteries I have. All of their versions only quote around 100Nm torque.

Still probably more than I could manage for some jobs though. Not cheap though £150+

I was under the impression that heavy duty dugga-duggas were referred to as impact guns. Impact-assisted screwdrivers are impact drivers. Impact ratchets occupy some sort of middle ground (or so it seems to me).

Cordless impact wrenches and ratchets both have socket drivers in various sizes like half or three quarter inch. An impact wrench (dugga) will loosen and tighten using impact forces and then torque. A ratchet (first picture of thread) will loosen and tighten by torque alone. There may be some impact mechanism but it won’t be as strong as an impact wrench.

An impact driver has a quarter inch hex chuck for took bits and is primarily used for screws but you can get various sized bits, including small sockets for coach screws.

A drill just has a Jacob’s chuck but may have an impact mechanism for masonry drills.

There is a slight overlap with all of these things but they intended for different jobs and I wouldn’t buy one of them hoping that it would do the job of more than one.

Air ratchets were used all the time when i was a mechanic, great for getting to bell housing bolts, starter bolts ect.
You could usually crack the bolt off manually with the ratchet then use the air function to drive the bolt out.
My air ratchet is a lot slimmer than those battery ones though.
