Porcelain Slabs

Post by Felix »

I was asked to fix a small wall today. Its about 2' tall and topped with cut down Porcelain slabs. They have a hangover of about an ich each side and have all came loose with folk sitting on them or stepping on the wall to get to the higher section of the garden. Even the large dog jumps up on them. Can i use a silicon to stick them back down with? Was thinking of something like Sikaflex as it will keep an element of flex about it what may make it last longer.

Buy cement you twat as its a shit idea????

Q1? Why do they have such a large overhang? That's going to add leverage if people sit/stand on the edges.
Q2? What's the underside of the slabs like? Is there anything to key onto?

(I have a similar problem with some steps. I'm seriously considering drilling and screwing as a solution! :) ).

Cowboy landscaper did the overhang. I would cut it off but only have a small disk for the grinder. Plus i have seen drunks walk straighter than my cutting. Even the steps going into the two patio doors have the overhang. I put facings on under them what reduces the overhand by a good1.5cm. The underside is a crisscross pattern what may be about 2mm deep.

Hmmm. Tricky. I'd be tempted to try bathroom tile cement (or floor tile) and grout but I've no idea how it'll be with the temperature range - full sun to sub-zero. (Although the floor tiles in our conservatory seem to stay stuck down).

I've seen CT1 recommended and used for this by people who think these things through

It's very popular, you could say it has a lot of adherents.

You say that as if it's a bad thing?

CT1 no doubt about it. I just glued a brick overhang with it. Literally a brick snapped in half, overhanging a window sill.

Received wisdom tells me once in place and cured, even in exposed exterior use, it ain't goin' nowhere.

Not the sort of thing you want to get wrong! Put all the effort into alignment, spacing and level/plane. Various tricks for doing that including jigs, shim supports, even frickin lasers. You won't have any opportunity to realign it. Not ever.

Forgot to say. CT1 has done the job and last checked last Friday and all wall tops are still sitting solid. Some folk have still use the wall as a seat regardless of the sign saying not to but yeah, still stuck solid

Sikaflex was recommended to me to reseal the roof joints on a van what did the job well. However since doing this job with the CT1 it will be the tool of choice from now on
