Classic Fords

I reckon the reason I like classic Fords is because of what they represent, they are kind of special but genuinely reachable for the average blue collar punter. Not everyone can afford a 911 Turbo, but a bloke on an average wage can afford an RS Ford - if it's his passion and he puts his money into that instead of other things.

Growing up I'd see RS Fords in the driveways of lots of blue collar workers, it's a working mans exotic reachable dream.

The one RS that you NEVER see is the RS1600i Mk3 Escort, yeah it's a glorified XR3i but I've only ever seen one of them outside a car show.

If you mean the Mk3 RS Turbo a friend of mine had one, he was a printer, he's now head of IT for the UK office of a major shopping line. The cam shaft snapped in half, didn't do any damage to the engine, just needed a new cam shaft.

The RS1700T was more interesting, Ford made 400 1700T body shells before they had a finished car, because the car never made production Ford sold off the body shells, I knew someone who bought one and built a rally cross car with the shell.

There's another 'rare' sporty Ford from the 90's that no one remembers, but wasn't half bad.

The FRP.

Like a normal Puma, which was a great car in it's own right, but wider, lower and more fastererer.

They made 500 of them, only sold them in the UK, they lack steering lock and aren't a great deal quicker than the standard Puma, I had a standard Puma and went and had a look at an FRP but decided it wasn't worth the money they wanted for it. There was also a Supersport 1600 rally Puma which was pretty successful and is even wider than the FRP.

The plastic inlet manifold from the FRP goes for silly money as it's the part that gives most of the FRPs extra 25bhp

BTW the standard Puma is a fantastic car, probably the most fun car I've ever driven, also the most impractical

They were, a bloke round the corner works for the local Ford body shop and said the fibre glass arches on the FRPs were put on a bit shit.

I was given a 1.6lx Sierra for free, MOT'd it and flogged it for £300 and was well pleased. Also bought an XR4x4i for £300 and drove it for a while before getting £600 and an XR2 for it.

Swapped a clapped out Sherpa and an FZ600 for an immaculate Mk2 Granada Ghia X.

Wish I still had them now......

Lot of people on the LDV and DAF groups would love a Sherpa. I had a Mk2 Escort what was a heap o shite. Orion Ghia what was a cracking motor but a yank tourist killed that. Had one of the last Ghia Cortina's what was a nice drive but the three speed auto box was shit on fuel. Lots of Mk3 fiestas what make great winter cars. Today i would not look at Ford if ever looking for a new motor.

I didn’t have an RS1600i but I had a few Mk3 Escorts of various specs and they were all ok to drive, nicer then an Astra (I had a GTE) or something.

My mate had an E30 M3 at the time and that was very much nicer to drive, but that’s an E30 M3!!

We had Mk3 Escorts and Sierras at BT, the Sierras were much nicer to drive, I don't remember ever driving a mk1 Astra, I quite liked the mk2, didn't like the Mk3 but liked the mk4.
