It was built to win at Le Mans. And it did. Not outright obviously, but the GT class.

A small Turbo engine is better for that. Porsche won outright in the Prototype classes with a 2 litre V4 :o

Road cars are all going Turbo now for emissions and economy.

The XJ220 reminds me of the Amiga game, which was basically just a re-skined version of Lotus Esprit Turbo challenge, except you could tune the radio to play the a-team theme.

The odd things you remember, eh!

Oh and I'd happily have an Esprit, but don't think I'd fit in one. Maybe one for Potters list.

The other thing that springs to mind when the 220 is mentioned is the top gear Clarkson review where he accelerated so fast the radio fell out.

Poor old XJ220 :( Technological masterpiece, fastest car in the world, Le Mans success (but later DQd) ridiculous price tag, a proper 1990s long and low hyper car.

Completely gazumped by the even more impressive McLaren F1 which launched a few months later :lol: The last road car (probably ever, now) to win Le Mans outright.

I wouldn’t have another turbo engine in a sports car, it ruins them.
Unfortunately emissions will eventually kill off big N/A engines, its all about small turbos from here on in.😭😭

When Granny's wee one litre runabout puts out the same power as a 3 litre Capri, you know the writing is on the wall for the big stuff.

I worked for a firm in Farsley and the owner bought a NEW XJ220.

After a while someone worked out the first year's depreciation. It was than anybody there earned.

Back in the 90's i took a noisy Ford Cosworth engine out, as Cosworth's were still fairly new ,Ford asked us not
to strip the engine and said they would take it for inspection and supply a new one.
I fitted new engine and put old one back in the crate, the crate sat in the workshop for months uncollected
so one day i removed the cam cover and hung it on my garage wall.
Fast forward to now and i saw someone selling fibreglass replica cam covers on EBay which got me thinking
there must be a market for them .
I cleaned up my 30 year old cover and put it on EBay a few weeks ago and got £420 quid for it.
