I worked with mechanical engineer on a project. Had to show him how to use ring and open spanners to do up nits and bolts ...

I've met - and helped - quite a lot of graduate engineers who don't really know how to use spanners and stuff like that to be fair.

It's easy to laugh and say they can't possibly know much about Engineering, but loads of young people come to the subject via Maths, Physics, stuff like that. Or even just because they got pushed by their parents into having "a proper job".

If you grew up with your Dad fixing motorbikes or whatever it's only natural that you'd think everyone who's into the subject got into it that way, but they didn't.

Engineering, same root as the word "Ingenuity" and not restricted to spanners

I haven't got a scooby doo how to use a lathe or a mill, but I hold more than one patent on manufacturing technologies.

Had to be said on my Engineering course i can't remember ever touching hand tools. Lathes and mills yes (still got my Planimeter somewhere )

We used either in car (meaning sitting in front seat) or facing car ( looking at front of car) as we were dealing with china and the clueless.

There were still some fuck ups, I set fire (cuased alot of wiring damage) to a car that had the wrong colour wires in the loom. Wrong wires in the terminals. Not sure the car even worked when it arrived, as no one tested it before hand.

Working for a motorcycle OEM is equally confusing when trying to work out lhd and rhd...

I've never really thought it needed discussion. I've always put mine to the side of the screen and quite low down - using it as a guide/info; not causing a problem for vision, not distracting, can reach it if I need to touch the screen (choose a new suggested route for instance) etc etc

Often I've seen people with them in the middle of the screen, but relatively low down and relatively small phones - I don't get putting them in the middle of the screen, but each to their own if they can still see out well.

The weekend just gone I saw four (I think, I lost count, my WTAF-o-meter was in overdrive, for this and other things!) drivers with big FO phones up high and only slightly to the right of their field of vision

Seriously? Surely this is illegal? WTF would you want a sodding great phone in your field of vision in your screen whilst driving on small mountain roads - or any roads TBF??


Mind you, the standard of driving was pretty horrific in general - a lot of people crossing the white lines or swerving hard for seemingly no reason A bit scary - and it wasn't even a holiday weekend

My scabby work van the sat nav lives to the right between the A pillar and steering wheel. I like to look at it with just moving the eyes rather than the head. My camperbus i have it sitting on top of the speedo binnacle but i have a huge windscreen and sit high. One of my vans i replace the rear view mirror for the sat nav, The car i tend not to bother as the wife who is always right so dont need one.

I've never even tried my car satnav, it will be a poor product designed to fleece me for annual updates.
