The Honda DCT is similar to the Gertrag TCTS used by VW and Mitsubishi, they're nothing like traditional torque converter automatics, the only bikes I can think of with that type of transmission are some 1970s Hondas and Husqvarnas

Don't see the difference, flap a paddle on a DCT car, press a button on a DCT bike, car/bike changes gear. S'why I asked wot makes this Honda different. Still don't know.

I should google this, but something in my head says that Porsche invented the tiptronic gearbox (for the original Boxster)... ergo, the father of all flappy paddle or gear selectable automatic gearboxes.

They licensed it to other manufacturers, including Mr Bishi.

Prior to that you could lock your slush box into 1/2 for pulling away/towing, etc.., but that was about it.

VW and Mitsubishi use the same gearboxes, the VW diesel engine bolts straight into the last Lancers, which also means you could put an Evo engine in a Seat Leon.

In the murky world of OEM manufacturer, most companies don't actually invent anything. They buy the technology off a third party. I'd be willing to bet the Tiptronic box, if it indeed was first used in a Porsche, was actually developed mostly by someone like Bosch, Borg Warner or ZF and then billed as "in conjunction with".

Kinda feel like they're much older than Boxsters too?

DCT/DSG are manual gearboxes with auto clutches and changing. They still have a geared connection between engine and wheels. A torque converter automatic car is a whole different way of working with no physical gears connecting the two. I like this gearbox in my cars but hate DSG in cars. On the bike though the DCT is great as it’s a proper geared gearbox and provides the same direct connection as a manual one. On the move in manual mode it’s no different to a bike with a QS and blipper. It still has a clutch that’s operated by the bike 😃

That distinction is blurred at best :D. The kind of gearbox in your bike is no different to the kind in plenty of cars billed as "auto".

If you ain't gotta change gears yourself, it's an auto innit?
It does seem a bit like saying synchro gearboxes aren't really manual because you don't have to double de-clutch.

(You can change gear 'manually' on a Suzuki Burgman but I don't remember anyone claiming they weren't automatic).

Should we do CVT next?

Derailing even further: what's the problem with them?

[Edit to keep it relevant: " ... that doesn't apply on bikes such as the Hondas with DCT?"]

BMW went to DCT in cars and have gone back, they're traditional auto only now. Modern slush boxes are so "snappy" there's just no need for DCT is their argument. You can get more ratios in a normal auto box too, 9 or 10 isn't unusual now and they package well in RWD cars.

They don't really fit in a bike though, pretty much literally.

Mitsubishi made CVT Lancers, they weren't good, I don't remember anyone loving the DAF 33 either.

Upsetting isn’t correct. Irritating the fuck out of is. It’s like having a bunch of old thick fuckwits wander in to your house continuing their argument over basic principals of something really simple that you don’t give a shit about while you’re watching tv despite the fact that you’ve asked them nicely to fuck off. HTH.
