1982 Z1000J Tank Refurb

Post by Le_Fromage_Grande »

I've decided to get the worse of my Z1000J tanks refurbed, it's been resin lined at some point and the lining is breaking up, so far I've had the tank cut open by someone who knows what their doing, and the upto 15mm thick resin removed, next step getting it shot blasted.

And that's why I don't like the concept of tank sealers.

That's after it had a couple of days of tank sealer remover in it.

People who line tanks need a swift kick to the spuds.

I've decided to change the filler cap to an aircraft type, so I've got to wait for that to arrive before the whole lot can be welded back together and painted

What are you going to do to protect it from the dreaded ethanol?

Run it on Shell V-Power! AFAIK ethanol free, for now at least.

Esso Super unleaded is also ethanol-free (in most of the UK, anyway). But if you ever take the bike abroad, all bets are off...

After much talking with my mate and soul searching, a thin coat of POR15, one of his bikes has had it in for at least 7 years with no problems, tbh I'm more worried about leaving bare metal exposed to damp air than I am ethanol, I painted it with clean engine oil as soon as I got it home to try and keep the rust at bay, it'll need degreasing before welding, but it's going to be at least two weeks before the welder can do it, he's busy with race bikes this time of year.

The bike will get very little use, it's a show pony, so it will get ridden to about 5 local shows a year and maybe a few bike nights, it's not actually very nice to ride, the engine is a big old lump with a heavy crank and it steers a bit odd compared to a modern bike, but it is great if you like scraping metal as you go round corners.

The aircraft style filler cap arrived from China so the tank is back with Sam, the welder and fabricator, he's going to fit the filler cap for me, add a pipe for a breather and weld the tank back together.

I've had no choice regarding ethanol in fuel* for the past 24 years/122,173miles on the ZRX11, when should I expect to see issues?

*except when it's been gassed up with 100LL at the airport.

Ring for filler cap and breather welded on, it's going to get the dents knocked out from the inside next to reduce the amount of filler required when it gets painted
