Motorcycle travel insurance

Post by Dodgy69 »

Been looking at this and have been warned some companies don't cover bikes or 125+ bikes. Some don't even make it obvious if cover includes travelling by motorcycle.

Any guidance or recommendations?? 👍

It depends on where you're travelling to.
Have a look on the HUBB forum on Horizons Unlimited website. It's full of information for 'Overlanders'.

I used Yellow Jersey, as they covers me for MTB up to 3k m, for Morzine. They are also unlimited in what bikes I could ride - as long as I had a licence

Yep, most normal travel insurance only covers you for bikes up to 125cc, although some policies are a bit vague and, depending how you interpret the wording, suggest you might be covered. My view is if it doesn't explicitly say you're covered for riding an unlimited sized bike abroad, get travel insurance that does.

Google "motorcycle touring travel insurance" and you'll get links to companies who can provide this. Some do insurance that you don't have to take out for a year, and which is cheaper, but if you're doing multiple trips in a year, the yearly cover is more cost effective.

I use Carole Nash and it's £80 for a year; I chose it as they were the cheapest for my medical condition (heart attack 3 years ago - was only 48, and they don't know why it happened. Well, they know what caused it (blood clot), but they don't know why I developed a blood clot (and this was before any of the covid vaccines were available (in case anyone wanted to go down that nonsense route)). However, if you've not got any conditions then some of the others may be cheaper, or offer slightly better cover for the same price (the Carole Nash cover was more than adequate for my needs).

Ye, they usually show single trip or yearly, only need single, but it's a bloody mine field.

Will look some more, cheers all. 👍

I use Post Office for travel insurance because they do cover riding bikes over 125cc. (Which I've confirmed several times)

I use Carole Nash travel insurance for me and my girlfriend. No cubic capacity limits.

So far, Caroline nash for single trip and big bike is coming in at £89. Bennetts don't do it anymore. Most of the others are a bit unclear. 🤷‍♂️

Last time I used travel insurance for European bike trips (obvs my standard bike insurance covered some aspects for so many days a year iirc) I went with the AA. It's hard to see whether they'll actually do it now apart from up to 125cc ie if you hire something on holiday).

However...when I actually tried to contact them on one trip (nothing serious, just wanted a bit of information) it proved impossible. Who knows why but you couldn't contact them on the number given from a mobile phone.

OTOH. Someone on a Flash tour trashed the final drive on his BMW bike (in warranty) and they were brilliant with recovery and getting him and bike home. It's worth looking at what the warranty means if you have a newish bike.
