I bought a KTM

Post by westers151 »

A 1290 Super Duke GT, to be precise.

2022 model, ex demonstrator, the important extras (Tech Pack), and 1900 miles on the clock. Picked it up today and did 70 miles on it in cold, slimey conditions; what a motor - never had a V-Twin before, let alone one this big. Effortless riding, the best I can describe is "wafting along".

Anyway, I'm in love until it falls apart like a cheap (expensive) suit; KTM, I've put my faith in you having sorted out your history of shoddy bikes, please don't ruin it once the honeymoon period is over.

:)

To be fair, anything this good I'm expecting to be high maintenance, they usually are

It looks exactly like the one on their website - there's only one colour for a Super Duke GT.

I'm loving it, and that's only the first proper ride (test ride was a bit shorter). I never really gelled with my S1000XR - it was too big for me, even after I'd lowered it. I could chuck it around ok, but it needed a lot of effort to do that. I toured a fair bit on it and found that after 3 days of constantly heaving it around I'd have built up enough upper body strength to handle it, but I still felt (and looked) like a flea riding a dog's testicle.

The GT is much more like the MT-10 I had (except I can actually ride it past a petrol station (that thing had stupid fuel consumption), and it's comfortable). I love the riding position - you're over the front wheel (or feel like it), yet it's comfortable - didn't feel heavy on the wrists.

And that motor......

What's the difference between the Superduke and the GT version?

It's got a screen, innit.

I've been out on a few rides around the Peak District with a mate who has one, and it just seems ridiculously capable at just about everything, be it back roads hustling, covering large distances with minimal fuss or pulling really impressive wheelies.
There is no cloud, just somebody else's computer.

The obvious difference is the fairing/shrouding, bigger tank, and the screen. Apart from that, the frame on the R looks totally different to the GT at the swingarm, and I'm guessing the geometry of the R might be a bit more sporty than the GT, but I'm no KTM expert.

Weight is a lot less on the R (Wet weight: 200Kg for the R vs 220Kg for the 2022 GT), but the engine, power and torque is the same.

That was my impression after two rides, albeit very cold, and slimy roads. I'm shit at wheelies, so I need to get to wheelie school, or just accept that at 51 I don't need to learn, but I took it down my favourite B and A road ride, and it handle it well. I also get the feeling it'll be great at the Spain/France tour I'm doing next year.

Apologies for the photo, but it is one of my favourites. 🙂 These bikes are great at everything, touring, trackdays, whatever. Nice riding position, sound ace, go ace. Enjoy. 👍

Thanks Dodgy, and even after my sedate winter ride, I can feel what it's going to be like when it's dry.

For the first time, in quite a while, I'm actually excited about a bike - it has character, and makes me grin, (which is what it's all about), and I like the looks.

Having a mate with over 105k miles on his 1290 Adv the engine at least should be robust. He's not had any issues in fact and despite being ridden all year round cleans up real nice.
