Help me with this car Relay problem

Post by Jody »

Hello all,

below you will see two relays

The one at the top was bought to replace the one at the bottom. I was led to believe they were the same. I now know they are not.

Which wires do I switch to make the new one work?

Would assume it will switch the supply to the compressor maybe? If so following should work:

Pins 85 and 86 - no change
Supply you are switching - 30 and 87 on new relay

Are there cables connected to all terminals on the old relay?

You would have to remove the connection to 87a and connect it, along with the existing connection, to 87 (so both wires are on 87 and none on 87a).
The old relay switches two circuits on and off together, the new one alternates between them.
Or, buy the correct relay, which would be the better solution.

That's what I had tried to do, I thought I got the numbers matched !!

Would you be kind enough to let me know what I should be looking for, as I'd prefer the right relay if possible :)

A quick search came up with this which looks like the correct relay with 2x 15A outputs.

Just realised the link I posted is for a used relay. Here is a link to 2 x new relays from China.

Something like this, I'd say

They aren't that common, you need a double pole, single throw (DPST) relay, not a SPDT (changeover) relay, which is the replacement one you bought and the most common type.
