Not in the UK!?
Nope! It was in NE Spain, on the coast about level with Girona. This was the second photo I took after encouraging it off the road with a pine needle, hence the side-eye I assume.
I assume they're the same as here (Alicante). The smaller brown one is a male and can fly, the longer slim green one is female and can't fly. Here's a bit about mantis mating:

If I'd know he could fly I'd probably not have spent 5 minutes trying to get him off the road! It's the first time I've seen one of these around there (Baix Emporda).
When I was on Indonesian Borneo, deep in the pristine tall pole forest, in the mid 90s one of those mantises bit (or maybe clawed) me in the head so I grabbed it and hoyed it on the ground and stamped on it. Then a monkey ate all my fags.
To a kid looking up to me, life ain't nothing but bitches and money.

There's a whiff of the William Burroughs in there...
So many little details:
- circular L plate, which matches a light on the other side for visual balance
- the animal print
- "I've been to __ " stick-on pennants on the screen
- the stand is down - but he still seems to have to hold it up
No, I'm not there yet. Probably my era - 1970's or thereabouts. Something unusual, coupe, fastback-ish, horizontal rectangular tail lights - Gilbern? No - lights are wrong. Help me here, all you teenage (then) petrolheads.....
