Re: Sex wee
I mean the fact the headers poke out left and right, every other Guzzi (and indeed Beemer) has them pointing forwards.
I know why they've done it (means you can feed the engine from a big air box under the tank) it just looks weird.

Re: Sex wee
If you 'flattened' the Guzzi engine out to make a boxer then the exhaust is rotated 90° clockwise looking at the heads end on innit? From pointing forwards to down.wull wrote: ↑Sun Sep 25, 2022 9:52 amI think they’re 45’, 90’ would be straight out boxer like.Mr. Dazzle wrote: ↑Sun Sep 25, 2022 8:50 am I still can't cope with the 90' turned cylinder heads.
I didn't notice when they first launched this engine, but now I can't unsee it.

Re: Sex wee
I think the trick they've done with the heads (and inlet/exhaust) is a smart move and doesn't look out of place. The edge of the cylinder head is still the widest point of the engine and the exhaust won't touch any body parts, so I'm all in favour. Die-hard Guzzi purists may object, but I don't fall into that camp. At a stroke they've made the engine more modern looking and substantially increased its performance.

Ever drive one of the later 5 pot turbos?
We got one up to near 400 bhp for a punter.
Anyway, dunno what to make of that Guzzi, it's like they've made a Heinz 57 out of all the other manufacturers. It's like a tin of London Grill.

Re: Sex wee
I edited my comment when I realised it was a 90’ L like twin. But the heads as we look at them are 45’ from verticalCount Steer wrote: ↑Sun Sep 25, 2022 10:00 amIf you 'flattened' the Guzzi engine out to make a boxer then the exhaust is rotated 90° clockwise looking at the heads end on innit? Re: Sex wee
That's still not my point
On every other Guzzi the inlet is at the rear of the cylinder and the exhaust at the front. In this bike the inlet is in the centre and the exhaust is on the left/right depending on which cylinder you look at. Everything is spun 90'.
They've done it for good reasons, it just seems "off" to me

Re: Sex wee
Probably because it's out in the open (especially on a Guzzi) and is a major part of the styling? It's not like a car, where the only bit you see is the tailpipe (on an ICE vehicle, obvs).

Re: Sex wee
I hadn't noticed until ^ that!
It's an interesting compromise - the exhaust has to be extended forwards instead if the intake path being extended out.
However, it does allow more freedom on size and location of the radiator.
Edit: if you can't cope with 90°, a CX500 would bring you out in hives
22° from inline with the crank

Re: Sex wee
There's also something vaguely mechanically satisfying about an arrangement where the crank and shaft rotate in the same plane so to speak. (Shame the power has to do a 90° turn at the back wheel but you can't have everything. ).

Re: Sex wee
That’s my fault for not even reading your comment correctly, just realised you’re talking about the cylinder head as opposed to the cylinders themselves. I don’t think it makes any odds so maybe more for access or space itself depending on what’s going on.Mr. Dazzle wrote: ↑Sun Sep 25, 2022 12:28 pm That's still not my point

Ah, there's the rub. It doesn't look as if it would be easy to fit luggage to it.Count Steer wrote: ↑Sun Sep 25, 2022 9:29 am If it has decent luggage available to fit it would be a nice touring option.

I thought not too, which would rather limits its usefulness. However, a quick rootle and there are some pics of panniers v neatly attached that look like they're styled/designed for it.Scootabout wrote: ↑Sun Sep 25, 2022 8:33 pmAh, there's the rub.
