Another networking Q
Just configuring ethernet backhaul and am using a cable tester to trace all the cables.
All OK except for cable that runs to our pool room and that has pins 1 & 2 crossed, from Googling its a crossover - assume for the use I have I need 1 & 2 to go to 1 & 2 at the other end?

Can't help but I am intrigued.
What's a 'backhaul' and, if the place is ethernet cabled, has it been done incorrectly or something? I assumed you just ran cables from a hub to sockets where you needed 'em.

If you want a straight cable yes, you should keep the cables as pairs to prevent crosstalk (a form of interference)
10mbps uses a single pair
100mbps uses two pairs oranges and greens
1gbps used all 4 pairs
White orange = 1
Orange = 2
White green = 3
Blue = 4
White blue = 5
Green = 6
White brown = 7
Brown = 8
10mbps uses a single pair

Whole house is networked but I run a WiFi mesh system, apparently benefits can be had by connecting the mesh access points to ethernet as it then allows transmission by WiFi but the return is via ethernet, freeing bandwidth or whatever tech bods call it.
Probably a crock of shit but sounds plausible, time for wine now

The crossover was probably deliberate for connecting to a hub, I haven't seen them used for years as it's all switches now. You could rewire the plug but unless you are practiced at it I'd spend a couple of quid on a cheap converter to plug in and swap it back.
It's been many years since I've done any physical networking so details may be off.

Mesh solutions are okay so long as they don't have problems, at which point they become utter arses to work out what's wrong, as one bad client can mess up the whole network.

What the cheese says. If all your APs are connected to a switch then it’s not a mesh. But that’s good, if the points are available then yes, you should use them. A mesh is for when you have no cabling available.
With the cabling, as long as the cables are all punched down on the same terminals on both ends then it will be fine. You don’t want any crossovers.
