EMail settings, membership/Subs renewals and other stuff.

What can the Admins do to help, any requests for changes, updates, etc.

EMail settings, membership/Subs renewals and other stuff.

Post by weeksy »

In the past week i've been working with our hosts and our techie @HiFi Kabin to get some issues resolved.

The first was that @sevenfourate didn't get an email notification when registering. That was echo'd by @Beancounter who mentioned he didn't find a renewal email too.

So we looked into it and had a setting wrong which meant that Automated forum backups were not working correctly. This was in the php.ini file and associated to the date/timezone.

Despite @HiFi Kabin and myself giving them 20 links of how to fix it... this took forever as the techie didn't really get the point. LOL.

But that's now resolved and the backups are once again working. Phew...

But the email isn't...

We have multiple errors going back to about 4 weeks ago when they moved us to a new host server... sometimes 1-2 errors a day, sometimes lots.... But all assocated to EMail functionality within the backend.

So i've passed all this to the Hosts and said "look at this please.." but i'm not massively hopeful.

As always we have a couple of options.

1. Put up with it.
2. Put our money in and get it sorted.

I already need to sort out a donation/payment for @HiFi Kabin as he's helping us on his own time and we chain-ganged him into being our techie after he offered some advice once upon a time over on phpbb forum :)

He uses a different host company for forums/websites and raves about their functionality and their support.

So once again, we're moving into the 'do we jump ship' scenario.

If it's not now, then i think in Feb when our year is up, we'll 100% be moving onto his hosts.... ours have been.. interesting at times lol.

At some stage, the techie will be taking the site down today probably to do some file restores on the back end and see if we can get it working as i'm not to hopeful of the Host techs getting it.

But be aware, subscriptions will expire and no-one will get notification currently.... (or maybe for months lol).

When subs expire do folk not notice when their username changes colour to grey?

Anyway, when you sort out payment for the techy dood, count me in for a donation.

I tried doing a @Count Steer in the test area this am and that doesn't send email notifications either. (Probably an easy test to see if it gets fixed).

Personally I'd wait until Feb....until then we can all point and laugh at people as a reminder when their subs have expired (or if they aren't subbed up anyway). :D

TBH i'm not sure the group policy things work well and whether people drop out of the group when it's expired... It's something i ought to look into more... The group system on here is a little... well.. complex... It's like "if you are in this criteria, but also in that one, then this one over-powers that one.... unless you're part of this, then this one over-powers that bit... but not the next bit..."

No.
I read this on my laptop and was blue, so thought mine had expired, but logging in on my PC shows me as purple, which I think means I'm still payed up :dunno:

Several of you should be coming up to renewal date at the moment. We've had a few members renew in the past week which makes me think the EMail functionality is restored for those too.

But if any of you guys who reads these, do get an email this week, please do post up... Whether you re-subscribe is entirely up to you, i'm not asking just to prod you in that context, just want the knowledge they're working well.

I got the in-forum notification that the renewal was up a few days ago (like an IM alert) - renewed, but didn't get any emails from the forum (that I remember) Got the usual email from PayPal though.

Oh that's intersting, i assumed the reminder was an Email not an in-forum notification.

Depends if they have it set in 'Group Forum Notifications' in the UCP....although I think default is ON?

It's buried in User Control Panel, Board Preferences, Notifications. If you ever need a 'great unwashed' member account to check stuff I may know just the account to use. :D
