The other side of the coin can be seen in those who accumulate considerable financial wealth and never know when to stop and just enjoy the fruits of their labour. They have the collector mentality and the only pleasure is in the next lucrative deal. It's never enough.

I had an uncle who was up to his ears in assets and drowning in money, yet had zero interest in the normal trappings of wealth. Judging by his outward appearance you'd never guess he might have a quid or two, because he only spent what he deemed necessary on himself. My brother in law was the same. He dressed from charity shops and others including myself gave him clothes and shoes to help out. When he died last year in an accident, his financial affairs and investments were a worldwide spider's web. Probate and solicitors are still drooling over it all over a year later.

I used to think it was a terrible quirk of fate that they didn't truly enjoy their money, but in reality they did,as the accruement was the buzz, the expensive gee-gaws most people buy held no interest.
A friend of a friend of a friend is a multi business owner and holds an impressive property portfolio, both here and abroad. Or simply put, he's absolutely minted! But I wouldn't swap places with him if I had to put his hours in! Similarly, my friend's Son is a solicitor, or lawyer I think they call them now, just finished his articles/training and always works 12 hours a day and puts time in over the weekend often. I'm sure he'll reap the financial rewards later in life but at what cost? Where are his memories? Approaching 30 and apart from a few holidays, he's spent most of his 20s staring at a screen or being asleep! Bought himself a lovely A45 AMG thing but never uses it!

I'm sure there's a better work/life balance to be had for a lot of people, but everyone chases an ideal set by someone else or the society we've created because of those ideals. I can't remember who said it, (Jimmy Carr?) but industry awards are a pat on the back to make you work harder to improve your reputation and earn the bosses more money in the process. That's not as cynical as it sounds when you think about it...

If I'd worked till 66 I'd have had 2 or 3 million.
I packed it in at 54 as my time was more important.

These fellas that start work in their teens and they're still doing it at seventy despite having millions in the bank have found something that they really get satisfaction from. Not many people spend from 16yrs old to 70yrs old doing a job they love.
It's a fair point. I didn't regard either my uncle or BIL as miserable people, maybe just out of step with most.

I suppose the well worn adage of 'find a job you love and you'll never work a day in your life' is pretty apt.

The pursuit of what we imagine to be happiness can result in the opposite. I prefer a general level of contentment.

Yes, agree with all of that.

I've never wanted to be loaded (although I wouldn't refuse a lottery win), all I ever wanted was to be sufficiently comfortably off to pursue what I wanted to do.

I watched people in the IT industry turn from being OK blokes to complete arseholes just so they could climb the greasy pole. No thanks - I'd prefer to be able to look at myself in the mirror and not feel revulsion.

Women on Facebook that are married mums and plain Janes, until they get divorced and then they're back on the market and they suddenly slim down and start to dress all sexy, going out all the time and being the life of the party. My mate has one, he said when they were married he couldn't get her off the couch and she spent most of the day in jogging bottoms, but now they're divorced she's hitting the gym, gone skinny and wears really short clingy dresses and has had her lips and face done - he said he only ended up leaving her because she was an absolute lazy cow that wouldn't do anything or go anywhere - now that's exactly what she's doing
Either he did her a favour or she's making a financial investment and will revert to type after the next wedding.
One of my Ex's got into shape before we met. Got out of shape while we were together, then got back in shape after I left. So I think I lost that round!

Another went from good figure to amazing while we were together, now with her new boyfriend she's put on a shit tonne of weight. So I think I won that one !

Contact lens cases. We've done contact lenses, tiny little things that make life so much better, but I recently noticed something about the design of contact lens cases that made me happy.

Image

This sort of case which has "L" on the left cap and "R" on the right cap. The threads on each side of the case are moulded 180 degrees apart and dsdo are the caps so that no matter which side you put the caps, when the letters are the right way up "R" is on the right and "L" is on the left.

A designer somewhere, designing something as mundane as a throwaway plastic case took the time to make it just a little bit better. :)

And the letters are big enough to read without wearing the lenses.

I posted a while back about one of Gremlinette's school friends who has a disabled mum and gets the piss ripped out of him as he's not on the 'cool list'. By the sound if it his family haven't got a pot to piss in, so for his birthday Gremlinette organised a bit if a surprise get-together round ours (I was confined to barracks in the living room, being riddled with pox) with a few of his mates and a few of her mates. He's a bit geeky and has been after a record player so she cajoled the others into a bit of a whip round and bought him a retro style jobbie and a few classic albums. Nothing flash, but a nice, thoughtful gesture.
I bailed about 9.30 to my sick bed and was surprised to find the garden and kitchen in a presentable state this morning.
I gotta say, she's a good kid. Makes me proud.

I wear RGPs. The trouble is, they are very similar power but a completely different shape. So to differentiate them the left is a blue tint and the right is a grey tint.

I've probably covered this before but that might have been at the old place and it's happened again this morning.

Guest arrives early, like REALLY early 6 hours ish. He calls, I pick up (because I'm not busy!!)

"Hoi is that Jody?"

"Yes this is Jody at Vacansoleil, how can I help"

"We are family XYZ, we have just arrived at the camping, we know we are early, but is there any chance we might be able to check in?"

" I'll come to you now, hold on 2 minutes"

I explained to the guest that the last family had only just left and I hadn't had a chance to clean the cabin yet. After letting him see how dirty is wasn't I told him they could have it now, but they would need to perform the clean themselves and they would still need to clean at the end of their stay as usual.

They'd driven through the night and he was exhausted, he was delighted to take the cabin so early and I have one less clean to do. A win for everybody !

Jesus, does no-one read the threads properly ???

One guy calls me 2 hours early. 2 hours before I start work. When he was told it wasn't possible, he kept asking and asking and asking (he also lied and said that head office had told him he could come at 2pm. I know they haven't told him that!). Yes he's a cunt.
One guy calls me 6 hours early, while I am working. He asks me very nicely if I can help and I can so I do and as an added bonus, it helps me out too!

Maybe get an adult to read posts to you if you're unable to comprehend them?
