Home build BBQ/smoker.

Post by Wreckless Rat »

Ok - I’m after ideas.

I have a large old gas bottle and a small one (both are 100% completely emptied).

I want to build a smoker/bbq - now I’m thinking gas for the BBQ side for control - and a side burner for smoke generation when smoking. I know many purists will not like the idea of gas for the BBQ side, but I think you can get pretty good results with gas and lava rock, and it’s easier to control the heat, faster to fire up for the odd flame grilled Steak etc....

Looking about, gas burner kits are pricey, so possibly build my own, they don’t look complex to make.

Anyone done something like this? Any hints or knowledge you’d like to pass on?

Nice project. If it was me, I'd be all over facbook buy/sell groups looking for an old BBQ to rip the burner out of and have the two chambers separate - i.e. a gas grill and a charcoal/wood smoker. Plenty of plans on the web for offset smokers built form gas bottles.

The two chambers is the plan, offset design like you say.

I too thought you'd be able to pick up old BBQs and rip the burners out, for peanuts, but with current CV19 issues, everyone seems to think their old knackered BBQ is worth as much as a new one. Perhaps I just need patience. lol

I'm building a barbeque at the moment, out of stainless, it will double as a forge with a water cooled tuyere to blow air through ( lidl airbed inflator)

It's almost finished, I got it laser cut and folded, I just needed to bolt/weld together, shame I've missed the summer.
