I did say right at the start that I haven't really cleaned this bike in 60k miles didn't I?
Front wheel spokes are a right pita to clean, so I haven't.... Until today
Wheel out, disks off and chucked in the bin and out with the wire wool
Fortunately there nearly zero corrosion under all of that shite

The front wheel bearings turn out to be a story of two halves. There's the one bearing that the seal had done a great job and the grease looks surprisingly new.... (The camera flash makes it look dirtier than it is)
And then there's the others side that the seal had obviously failed and the inner race kind of fell out leaving the outer race in place.
Now to figure out how to get the outer race out as it's bigger than my biggest blind bearing puller.
The last time this happened to my I took a Dremel to it which is probably what I'll land up doing to this one

Yeah, in all the wheels I've ever done there's been a small cut out in the hub that allows you to get a drift on the outer race.

There's a very small lip that I could get a drift on, maybe 1 or 2mm, by I'm concerned about the race not coming out square and damaging the hub.
Really, I'd prefer to drop a socket through from the other side but there's a lip right in the middle of the hub that holds the spacer tube in place, so that narrows the hole too much to get the socket through.

If you favour each opposite side in turn if it starts to go slightly wonky it normally works out ok. Obviously if you just wallop it askew and keep going like a brute it'll be a terrible mess.

I'm waiting for the postie to deliver a replacement wheel that I got off eBay, this turned out to be the cheaper option.

I went at the inner race with a drift and hammer with the intent of giving it lots of gentle taps around the edge and see what happens, and it just came out bit by bit. So slowly slowly I worked it out until it popped into the floor.
New bearings in using my (cycle) bottom bracket bearing press and in with the circlip. I don't understand the logic of only having a circlip on one side ???
Anyway, new disks on and the front wheel is ready to go back in once I've done the calipers.

Santa had arrived early
What looked like tarnishing on the spokes turns out to be chain lube & shite and the wheel is actually really really good.
Tyre and brake disk have probably about 80% life left in them, but they will be getting swapped out for the brand new brake disk I've got here, and the tyre on my old wheel that has only done a couple of hundred miles.
He also dropped off a clutch cable

Most of that is cleaning and cosmetic, dealing with corrosion, repainting.
one exception is the lh fork. That's got corrosion on the upper tube and will have to be replaced at some point but I haven't found one yet so may be left for the future.
The biggest task is doing the engine because it's so fiddly to get in all the nooks and crannies. The ideal solution would be to drop it out and send it to be vapour blasted and sprayed, but that's got all sorts of potential problems like shearing the exhaust studs etc.

Some more progress made today.
Front wheel refitted and both brake calipers cleaned within an inch of their lives, pads are now moving nice and freely.
Engine bars removed and prepped for paint. They have corrosion around the welds so blasted then with a wire wheel and given them the first coat of primer.
