Monster rustoration

Been tidying up the garage ahead of putting a new roof on and leaning in the corner is my old Ducati Monster where I left it back in 2014 after an Italian touring holiday.

I needed to move it so pumped the tyres up and took the cover off and pushed it into the garden, while its out may as well give it a wash.

Now its clean may as well.....

So here we go, not a full cosmetic job, haven't got time for that, just back on the road running then do the cosmetics later.

I bought a 996, then a GSXR1000, Superduke, then got back into trail riding - KTM 350 and mountain biking

So it just didn't get used and kind of got forgotten.

With a fair bit of trepidation I decided to have a look at the carbs to see how bad a mess of gunge lurked within, so out with the allen keys and in we go.

Luckily I'd replaced pretty much every nut and bolt on the bike with stainless and used copaslip on all of them.

10 minutes later and we're at the carbs.

Yeah, don't run it for too long without changing the belts.

Which is piss easy on a SOHC aircooled Ducati.

Which is piss easy on a SOHC aircooled Ducati.

Spot on, mate. Not even going to bother until belts are changed, oil drained, filter changed and motor spun over for a while with fresh oil. It's sat for a while so a week or two longer isn't going to hurt, not worth the risk.

Gave the fairing a polish and the screen a buff up, then took it off and hung it up.

While I was there gave the headlight rim a polish.

Took the front wheel and disks off to give them a proper clean.

Will finish them, give the calipers a good clean, change brake fluid and give the carbs a strip, blow through etc.

To be ordered list so far:

Battery
Belts
Belt tensioner bearings (if required, memory says fixed ones may need doing).
Tank Catch
Tank prop rubber

Plus more SDOC, some parafin and some Halfords tar and bug remover.

I read the other day that you should polish chrome with a crumpled up ball of kitchen foil dipped in salt water. Some reaction fills in all the pits.

My two Ducatis have never really like the idea of damp - they seem to go orange quite quickly.

I hassled him on the phone this morning and for various reasons he doesn't think it's going to fly for Aug. Partly because of a possible trip away and partly because of time constraints for various bits needed. I get that... I think he's talking rubbish, but i get it
