It got its nickname of "The Big Smoke" because through the 19th and in the early half of the 20th century, Londoners used coal for heating their homes, which produced large amounts of smoke. In combination with climatic conditions this often caused a characteristic smog, and London became known for its typical "London Fog", also known as "Pea Soupers". However, with the introduction of the clean air act in 1956, which stipulated that only smokeless fuels could be burnt in towns and cities, did London finally cease to be the Big Smoke. Londoners now enjoy some of the cleanest air in any UK city! I may have made the previous sentence up...
