Has anyone ever managed to recover a Hotmail account?

My tablet broke yesterday, which had my access to my Hotmail accounts. Not that I use them much.....about a year ago iirc.
Unfortunately my online leccy details were on the tablet too, which used my Hotmail account.
Trying to get my online leccy going, and of course it is sending logon details to Hotmail, and when I try and recover the account tell me 'not enough details to authorise recovery'
I do get the feeling that I've lost a 25yo email account!

Try to use the Microsoft Account Recovery Form or contact Microsoft support directly.

IIRC i recovered my hotmail account by sending confirmation details to a backup email I had on the account. Did you add a backup email address ?
