Gear change problems
Oooh. Don't come in here much..
Anyway, the gear change thingy stopped working on my last ride.
The push thingies both work OK, just the cable has become detached from the mechanism.
I'm sure I can fix it, just need to know what's wrong.
Can't see any way of securing the cable or getting it back into the little black thing in my hand which goes into a hole in the mechanism.
Has a bit dropped off?
Help

Re: Gear change problems
Comes in ere asking for help with his dusty bike bits - Good God man have you no Humanity - we haven't see the sun here since last June and have started growing gills !!!!
See the hole by your index finger that where the cable goes through - if you do that and trace a straight line you should see a threaded hole with a bolt and a .5cm square cable clamp. If you cant's see a 4mm head allen bolt (short) and cable clamp then you will have lost them or the bit with the threaded hole may have snapped off.
Probably should look like this: assuming it's 9 speed or maybe early 10 speed.
Clamp and bolt are available as spares though.

Re: Gear change problems
Looks like I've lost something and cable is frayed and won't go into the hole.
I'll nip it up to local shop. I don't know what I need, so will be simpler to give it to him
Cheers

Re: Gear change problems
Be about 10 euro for a clamp and bolt - get him to replace the cable at the same time - it looks fubarred. 10 mins of a job.

Re: Gear change problems
Full new inner and outer cable, it's not worth replacing one or the other on its own... Should be about £10-15 plus any labour charge in a bike shop and be running good as new again.
