Socks.... What an exciting one :D

Over the years i've worn many a pair of Carnac socks. Used to be sold by a cycling company. Daft patterns but importantly they lasted really well.

They're mostly dead now and company seems to be no longer.. So need more socks. Requirements are as follows.
Calf length
Warm
Not too tight on ankles
Don't leave a load of 'bits' about

I'm struggling.... i know... it's exciting isn't it :)

I've got loads of socks but mostly they end up with really tight elastic on the calves and are uncomfortable. Or tiny trainer socks which are mostly bugger are use to anyone.

If you want warm, you need wool and with a bit of silk in the mix they'd be great (silk = v.warm).

I'd start here

Falke do a range of cycling socks. Might be worth a look. Some look slimmer/more elastic around the calf than others. Key thing I've found with their activity socks is to try and get a pair where your feet are in the lower end of the size range ie if you're size 9 get socks for eg 9-11 range rather than eg 7-9. I got some for summer hiking and got it wrong...fortunately the missus is pleased with them as she's right at the lower end of their stated size range.

There's no other type of thing for me... day wear is cycling wear, is going out wear, is staying in wear... It's all the same sock. If i go out to pub i wear boots, so the socks can't be seen anyway :)

Smartwool socks are pretty good (same thing on sizing as I mentioned up there ^^^). Might not be long enough but if you have a Cotswold shop in the area they stock them so you could check them out. (They also have Oakley MTB socks but they're 100% synthetic - they're currently on sale at half price though...£10 iirc).

Actually heading off to our local Cotswold shop shortly...I'll have a look.

I feel your sock struggle! It's surprising how tricky it can be to find the perfect pair. I've had good luck with some hiking and outdoor brands for calf-length socks. They tend to be warm, durable, and usually not too tight.

If you want cycling socks, I gave Pongo a go and rate them and will buy from them again.

What ever I get at Christmas does me, I don't wear socks in the house so they don't get much use either way

I used to like Pringle ones for every day - but the got bought by the Sock Shop , which is now a front for some extreme Chinese tat merchant.
In fact all the socks in TK Maxx and M&S seem to come from the same shoddy mills. They last about 3 months at the most.

I also have some Carnac /On One ones - they are good but don't last
I have some sealskinz ones that I hate with a passion - the make my feet colder.
The Woolly Boolly ones are good

I bought M&S socks for years but, like their shoes, they've gone down the tubes. (It may surprise some but their shoes actually used to be pretty good!).

M&S stopped doing 100% black cotton socks years ago. Socks are the only thing I buy from Amazon, I can't find anywhere that sells them at reasonable prices. I tend to shred them because I wear slightly loose work boots and have rough feet.

There's boring.

Not boring at all to the average sockist. :D Folk don't pay enough attention to socks. They're quite complicated things. Most of us could knock up some sort of body covering approximating to a pair of pants and a t-shirt but they'd have to wind strips of fabric around their feet to approximate to a sock.

Spawn the elder takes commissions to knit socks. They know more about knitting, crochet and weaving than is usual.

Separate toed socks for the win, especially when worn with sandals, in a Roman soldier stylee.

I might agree about split toed socks with sandals if we're talking Japanese style tabi, they're quite cool. If we're talking 5-toed socks...I'm out.

V much in favour of knitting, crochet and weaving skills though.

The speed and accuracy of their knitting without a pattern astounds me.
