Alcohol Free Beer
Caught up with a few ex-colleagues last night. I was on the bike so drinking light - three pints of Brewdog's Punk AF over the course of four hours. I feel rotten today, similar to if I'd drunk 8 pints of Becks/Amstel/Peroni. This seems to be par for the course with AF drinks as a few bottles of Becks or Peroni alcohol free offerings generally leave me feeling jade too.
Anyone else getting alcohol free hangovers? I'm not a big drinker any more, I can go weeks without alcohol passing my lips and most times when it does it's a couple of pints, four at the most so my tolerance has dropped considerably but even then I feel worse after four pints of AF than I do from the regular pints.

Re: Alcohol Free Beer
Beer/lager gives me migraine. It's not the alcohol as I am fine drinking spirits so it's something else that's in it but I don't know what.

Re: Alcohol Free Beer
I should have stuck to shandies but then I always feel that a pint and a half (assuming three shandies) is getting risky.
Naively I always thought it was the alcohol that made me feel ropey but I guess it's the other crap they load into it.Trinity765 wrote: ↑Wed Aug 09, 2023 1:08 pm Beer/lager gives me migraine. It's only got like 4 ingredients? How much opportunity for crap is there?
I know some of the AF's have lactose added - how do you get on with 4 pints of milkshake?

I wondered if it was blood sugar levels. Spirits don't cause a sugar spike as much as beer does.Mr. Dazzle wrote: ↑Wed Aug 09, 2023 1:29 pm It's only got like 4 ingredients? How much opportunity for crap is there?

Re: Alcohol Free Beer
I've tried a couple. Heineken and Guinness zero draught. Either do the job for a reasonably pleasant drink. The Guinness was surprisingly decent.
The Heineken would give me stomach cramps easily, one bottle would be my max.

Sugar is my vice, Coca-Cola mainly. Three pints of Coke wouldn't have me feeling ropey. Can't say for milkshake cos I don't drink them.Trinity765 wrote: ↑Wed Aug 09, 2023 1:35 pmI wondered if it was blood sugar levels. Guinness Zero tastes very similar to the alcohol stuff, shame it's not on tap.

Re: Alcohol Free Beer
Many many years ago (when I worked in a pub!!) a few people told me that they didn't drink Stella because of how awful they felt the next day. They could drink far more of other lagers/beers/ciders at the time (early 90's) but there was something in Stella that gave them a massive hangover after just one pint.
Unfortunately I can't remember if any of them found out what was the issue
But I suspect there is an additive that, when with other stuff in drinks causes some people to feel bad

There's probably so much gas in some lagers that people get the bends.

I did a blind taste test using Guinness canned 'draught' and Zero on my resident lab rat and she couldn't tell which was which.Beancounter wrote: ↑Wed Aug 09, 2023 2:48 pm Guinness Zero tastes very similar to the alcohol stuff, shame it's not on tap.
As I mentioned before half and half would be a good barbecue type option...approx 2% ABV and 2/3 the calories...and cheaper.

Baby Ds Kid's meal, which probably would've satisfied most adults TBF, and included a drink and an ice cream, was cheaper than one pint of beer, AF or otherwise

Reckon pubs should be a bit more forthcoming selling tea and coffee to driver's instead of the daft stuff.

Re: Alcohol Free Beer
I didn’t used to drink alcohol at all and I so preferred a mug of tea to lemonade or coke.
You’d have though I had three heads any time I asked for a mug of tea in a bar - even when I was driving (not just being a non drinker )

If you like Kopperberg fruit ciders, I challenge anyone to tell the alcohol and AF ones apart!
