Weird computer problem

Post by Lutin »

My desktop PC is behavingreally weirdly - but only when running web browsers.

Everything seems to check out fine - run a memory test and checked the Crucial SSD (with their own utlity).

The problem is that practically no matter what web page I open it doesn't render properly. This happens in both Brave and Firefox - even their own settings pages don't render properly.

The system is an AMD A10-7860K on an Asrock FM2A68M-HD+ (really top of the line - NOT) with 16GB memory (2 x 8GB), Crucal 500GB SSD (MX500). Running Xubuntu 22.04.2.

The thing is it was working fine yesterday and there's been no updates.

Why there's only a problem with the web browsers is most definitely weird. Not come across anything like it

Graphics driver?

You might not have installed it, but the ATI software might have done it in the background at reboot.

Not under Linux it wouldn't.

Under firefox settings - performance try turning off/on using graphics hardware acceleration. What sort of rendering problem are you getting?

Problem solved. Ran Memtest86 v4.37 and it ran fine using all 4 cores on the cpu. Ran Memtest86+ 5.01 on qa single core and no problem. However, running Memtest86+ 5.01 on all 4 cores and the system consistently locked up after just over 5 minutes.

So, back to a dual core AMD A6-6400K from the four core AMD A10-7860K and everything's back to normal.

Never had a cpu going tit's up before.

In my long and boring 29 year IT career I've only ever encountered two CPU failures, both AMD chips.
