I'm thinking about cold stuff thrown in your tank bag*. Still got plenty of miles to do, don't want to waste time stopping too long anywhere, not too heavy on the belly and full of wonderful goodness.
Obviously I can't eat myself, so I usually go down the breakfast bar route, but there's got to be something better.
I take it you are talking about a whole day away somewhere? I'd never think of stopping to eat or drink when on the bike if it was up to 4 hours or so.
That's probably unhealthy,but I often leave the house early morning without so much as a drink,then just ride until I'm tired of it.
I love nuts,so if I was away all day I'd take a mix of pecans,almonds,walnuts and raisins,plus a bottle of water.
I'm lucky living in Cornwall, picking up a hot pasty is easy in most towns and many villages. Pop it in the top box and it will still be warm an hour later when I find somewhere scenic to eat it.
If I stray up to Devon I usually plan the route to stop at a known and decent cafe.
For energy on a hill I find malt loaf and bannock bread to pack plenty of energy without any chance of upsetting the stomach.
That and a bit of choc.
If it's car journeys I find picking at baby plum tomatoes (yes, I remember when you could buy them in the shops!), salad leaves and apple keeps me from having too much junk food. Diluting 2l bottles of sparkling water from your favourite german low cost supermarket with good quality squash (which can't be bought from the former) means decent fizzy drink for about 40p for 2l.
I still have to resist the temptation to take bananas, even though I know they will go all soggy within half an hour, and will be unpleasant when I find them a week later in my tail pack.
