Been here before 😁

Post by Couchy »

Been looking for another project to keep at work and tinker with between working, Wallies NC thread got me thinking so I bought one 😁. Didn’t want another UK one as they really are too expensive and rare now so hunted for a clean import. Took a while but this was local and only 18k miles. Price was very reasonable too. All standard with new tyres. Cleaned up ok and not too much to do. Exhaust blowing when cold, fork seal gone and that’s about it.
II’ll do some more bits before riding

Caliper strip and clean

New discs pads and lines

Shock and fork springs

Service

Just had calipers off and remarkably clean must have had attention before.

Parts ordered, shock, fork springs and seals, brake pads and hoses, m cyl kit and service stuff.
I’ll get that lot fitted before cosmetics and have a couple of rides. Making it shiny can wait till winter 😁

I always wanted an NC and I very briefly had a 30 years ago but it was broken and went back to the shop the same day.

I don't think I'd get on with the riding position now so I'll probably manage the desire vicariously through threads like these.
I’d been doing that on the other forum, now I can open the garage and smile as they’re a lovely little bike. Riding it hasn’t really been a thought apart from one or two classic bike Trackdays next year 👍

A number of my mates had them when I was about 19. I had a CB-1, I knew people with various VFRs, one guy even had an RVF which was unimaginably exotic to us at the time.

I'd love one now in the way everyone wants the bikes from their youth, but the reality would be somewhat different of course.

That said, a guy who's starting work for me tomorrow has one. Might have to ask for a go, if that's not some kind of inappropriate use of my position

Have to say I dont know much about these other than most rave about them. But why is that? What is it they do so well to stand this test of time?

I rest rode one one before I bought a GSXR400RR, the NC is probably the best handling bike I've ever ridden, but I didn't like the engine, it felt flat in comparison with the GSXR, and the GSXR was nearly as good handling.

I'd substitute 'linear' for 'flat' - it's a proto-typical Honda in that it does everything very well and was made in an era when Honda really were at the top of their game. Build quality is excellent as well.

I went to a shop to test ride one, they had an FZR400RR in so I tested that too.

I bought the FZR400, it was far more exciting.

Nostalgia.

Anyone who's had a zxr400 would still love one, me included. God that thing screamed!

I also test rode a ZXR the same time as the NC and GSXR, I didn't like it, but if you're over 5'8" you'd be cramped on any of the other 400s.

Really wish I'd have bought one when they were 1500 quid. Would prefer a 35 though as think they look better

The money they go for now is unreal, even 15 years ago. They were never made for the UK market though, all 35’s were grey imports.
