MotoGP To Run On Chip Fat?
Wonder what they'll use?
On to the new fuel supply for 2024, the Grand Prix Commission has announced that “it will be mandatory in all Grand Prix classes to use fuel with a minimum of 40% of non-fossil origin.” The statement continues to confirm that the exact specification for the FIM MotoGP fuel characteristics from 2024 to at least 2026 have now been agreed, with details set for release at a later date.
Aptly, this aligns with MotoGP and its sustainability aims. The goal is for the sport to adopt 100% non-fossil fuel types in all competition classes by the year 2027.

Personally I don't see it as a mass solution, electric motors are so much more efficient before you even get into the multiple energy transfers involved with making synthetic petrol. I can see it as a niche (relatively) thing though.
Aircraft seem more likely to adopt Hydrogen as the long term solution IMO.

Its all down to cost per litre (or gallon) as to whether this stuff gets mass uptake. Same as in the renewables energy sector. But the side effect of Putin's land-grab in Ukraine has been to boost oil and gas prices to previously un-thought of levels, thus making alternative technologies a lot more price competitive.

I see the primary advantage of synthetic fuel being the fact it "fits" with all the existing vehicles and infrastructure. Heavily compromised in that it still relies on inefficient engines and inefficient ways of moving fuel about (you have to actually carry it places in pipes/tanks/etc, unlike electricity) but requiring minimal change elsewhere. Electric cars, be they battery or fuel cell, are almost the other way around.
So it's probably a transitional solution IMO.

What is the base component of synthetic fuel? I'm guessing it's ethanol or a derivative. In which case in higher concentrations it will wreak havoc with the fuel delivery systems of older bikes - like (ahem) Triumph Bonnevilles...

Somewhat off topic, but AFAIK they did actually do jetting for amals to suit ethanol back in the day.

I was the chair monkey on a methanol burning Weslake outfit, started on petrol, run on methanol and flushed through and stopped on petrol. It ran the same with the main jets in or out, the hole in the jet was about 1/4".
And stop referring to 4T engines as diesels, the biggest ship engines are 2T diesels. Spark ignition is inferior to compression ignition.
