New laptop hard drive

Post by v8-powered »

Missus wants me to update the hard drive in her HP laptop to SSD - is there any way to create a mirror of the old HD complete with OS, license etc?
It's a fully licensed version of Win10 on there but no product key sticker on the machine, or is the key held in the BIOS?

Cheers

It's probably in the BIOS, IIRC if she logs on to it using a Microsoft account (outlook/hotmail, etc..) then the license should be saved against her account too.

Macrium is alright at copying disks and there's a free version.

You might have to link the activation to your M$ account first. See the above link.

With Windows in the mix, it really isn't your 'poota any more. Any substantial changes require authorisation from MS.

Get a Crucial SSD Hard drive and you can use the free Acronis software from the website to clone the hard drive. Dead simple and I've done more than a few systems like this. https://www.acronis.com/en-sg/promotion ... -download/

One who forgives an affront fosters friendship, but one who dwells on disputes will alienate a friend.
