I Swear This Will Improve Your Confidence

Post by Horse »

Or, you swear.

https://neurosciencenews.com/swearing-s ... gth-20251/

Swearing Can Increase Self-Confidence, Physical Strength and Risky Behavior

Summary: Usually frowned upon, researchers say swearing can increase a person’s self-confidence and boost their physical strength. However, the use of profanity can also increase risk-taking behaviors.

Keele University researchers have found that swearing can increase self-confidence and risk-taking behavior, as well as boosting physical strength.

Led by Dr. Richard Stephens, the team carried out a study which aimed to identify the psychological pathway by which swearing can have beneficial effects on physical tasks. They were particularly interested in whether swearing increased “state disinhibition,” which is a state of lowered self-control and lack of restraint.

The study, which has been published in the Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology, found that participants could perform a chair push-up—lifting oneself from a chair seat using the arms—for longer after repeating a swear word.

Participants also displayed more risk-taking behavior in an online task involving pumping up a balloon as much as possible without it bursting. Risk-taking behavior increased by 8% when using swear words whilst pumping up the balloon, compared to using neutral dialog.

The humorous quality of swearing was also found to be an important psychological route for boosting physical strength, akin to “letting go.”

The researchers hope that this evidence can benefit society by helping individuals to improve personal performance, for example gaining increased self-confidence by using swear words as preparation for performing in front of large public audiences.

Pumping up a balloon until it bursts is risk taking? That's a new low bar.

I've been doing it all wrong. :(

I usually cuss after I've skinned my knuckles/sheared the bolt/broken the plate. I need to do it before!!

For me, it was sometimes just as I passed the point of no return, immediately prior to impact ;)

That means I'll have to swear in every sentence between now and next time out. That's going to be a bit embarrassing. I know a guy who does that and yes, he comes across a confident  "'Awight Trini'y. How the f*** you doin''? Got the f**** kettle on? Thank f****. Sugar? F*** yeah. Two please. C***".

No wonder I'm an inferior wimp. I'm not one for swearing and a mental block means there are some words that I can't say.

Its all relative, innit?

Like (well, totally opposite really) Trinity's mate who swears more than he breathes, he obviously sees nothing 'wrong' with his vocabulary. So it could be that he could psyche himself up by not swearing.

You'll [probably?] have words that you keep in reserve for really special occasions.

I used to work on a very close knit team of mostly ex service personnel and ex building tradesmen so the language around the office was extremely colourful. That was fine when the door had a keycode and pass card system for anybody outside to get in and when we were deployed on our own closed encrypted radio channels but we had to be careful around normal offices and on normal radio channels not to let the casual C bombs drop

Probably didnt help that we spent most of our time dressed like druggies and had a few days stubble all the time to blend in where we worked so on the occasions we had to go to the main HQ the new receptionists at the desk always tried to direct us to the custody building around the corner as they thought we were crims responding to bail ......but we were always polite and didnt swear at them :wtf:

I do swear a lot more than i should but, fuck it, its how i have always been although i never swore in front of my kids when they were growing up ..... didnt help much as they all swear like troopers once grown up

Foal probably learned lots of interesting words from Filly as she responded to others' driving.
