Nice stop over between London and York.
Being as the Paris trip is now officially binned, we're thinking of going away over here for a few days prior to Christmas. Mrs. G fancies York, which I'm not averse to, but I'm wondering if the journey can be broken up somewhere nice, say the Peak District or similar. Any recommendations for places to stay, either nice country pub with roaring fire and three-eyed locals or an old manor house shamelessly sold out to become a exclusive hotel and spa?
Four of us going, me, Mrs. G, Gremlinette and her girlfriend so a fairly mixed bag in terms of interest. Personally I'd take the Hound of the Stupidville and go yomping over the Moors, but I suspect we'll need something more genteel.

Fischers, Baslow Hall if you a) can get in and b) don't flinch at the prices.
I would have suggested Hassop Hall but someone bought the whole place for a private dwelling.

Re: Nice stop over between London and York.
It's a 3 hour drive, does it really need breaking up?
Anyway, being an East London type you'll be going up the M11 and then the A1, on route I'd go for stopping in Newark, it's the least awful, but you could go via Lincoln, which is quite nice, come off the A1 at Newark and follow the signs for Lincoln. Lincoln to York is over the Humber Bridge and up through some of the Yorkshire Wolds, not a bad drive, but don't expect it to be quick.

York isn't that far from London, but it's the delays at Watford Gap passport control that cause the long journey times.

What do you fancy, country and remote or busy-ish town?
Matlock/Bakewell area is nice.

Can't particularly recommend anywhere fitting that bill on the far side of York, but the A1 is shit. Watch out for camera vans on all motorways, particularly from overbridges. Similar if you end up on the A64 or A19.
