Fix or not?

Rambling just now because I haven't heard a final decision from the insurance yet but...

I bought my GS for £11k 2 months ago and subsequently wrote it off.

Insurance estimate has it needing a new engine, fuel tank and rear subframe at £12.7k.

Engine...one bolt from the crash bars pulled out the crankcase and a helicoil or drill and retap would fix it or even run without them.

Fuel tank..secondhand tank.

Subframe...honestly I can't see anything wrong with it but I could go secondhand if needed.

To look at its literally undamaged apart from bent crash bars and £1k would see it back on the road spotless.

Anyone have an idea what price makes sense if I can buy it back? (bear in mind its probably going to be Cat C which will affect resale) If I'm only going to make a few quid it's not worth my while.

I've bought a car back before but never a bike so I literally have no idea.

Yes I could buy it back, fix it and ride it but any excuse for a NEW BIKE.

You're bound to make a profit if you buy it, fix it, then sell straight away.

Measure your subframe from a datum point then stick a 4x2 in and bend it back to where it needs to be! I'd buy it back in a heartbeat, depending on price obvs, but the repair is easy and nicely explained to a punter. Keep it and enjoy or sell it for profit and buy something better.

If they do and for a reasonable amount,then yes,I'd buy it back. You can be sure someone will if you don't.

I've done this in the past and either made a few quid,or had a cheap bike to run.

There is no cat c anymore.
S or N for returning to the road.
IF you can swing it for a cat N, then resale will be -5/10% compared to pre damage.
Cat S just sends out too many 'what if' and will hammer resale value.
If you get a good buy back price and are happy to ride around on it, that would be my option!

There lies the dilemma.

Mrs S had come into a few quid recently so the idea was just to get the insurance money, pay the extra and get a new 1250 next year.

Then I had the idea of buying it back, fixing it and selling it thereby contributing a bit more to the 1250.

Yes could keep it and make no mistake I loved it and if I hadn’t had the mishap it would very likely have been my last bike.

But now the idea of a new bike has wormed its way into my head…well you know how it goes.

You need to replace it like for like. So find a couple of adverts for bikes with similar mileage and age and send them to them.

Last time I did it I had to cut them out of bike trader and paste the adverts into a letter

Think I’ll go for a 1250 next.

I’m not sure if to go used or new. It’s probably going to be my last bike ( tho I said that about the 1200 and see how that turned out )

The time, effort, storage, parts and left over bits would really really make that a non-starter for me.

That's exactly what I did, twice, both times they increased it but the first time by not enough, so the second time I sent adverts of similar bikes and then said I'd be happy to go to arbitration for a fair price.

Ive had to this a couple of times with car insurance.

On one occasion I suggested I’d just get a claims management firm to open negotiations on my behalf on the basis there was no similar car on Autotrader for anything near what they had offered. I eventually got close to the right amount.

I had a triumph herald in about 1990...solid but a bit "distressed".
A whizzy bus backed round a corner ( i had just turned round) and straight into the front of me. Driver v. apologetic, details swapped. The insurance co. sent an assessor was quite rude and offered me £100....i told him not very politely to leave.
Wrote to the insurance company, streesing that it was a classic and they had damaged an orreplaceable major panel, and i would not take less than £300.
They sent me £450.
Meanwhile, i had sat on the bonnet a couple of times so it would shut, sold the car a few months later for more than i had paid.
Not lide changing sums involved, but it made oi larf.

Same for most of us. The only way I'd consider buying it is to sell it on as it is, which I suspect would still be very attractive to a large group of people. But if anyone doesn't like the hassle of selling bikes, then deffo stay away from selling salvage.

What a bunch of chancers and time wasters they are.

They offer.
You sigh and provide evidence of similar vehicles/prices and even from supposed legit sites like parkers.
They have a moan about the market being crap and unrealistic prices.
And round and round ....

Mrs. D's Civic ended up "going" for way less than it was worth. With my Volvo I was all set to have the arguments when they offered me £500 more than I thought it was worth

Presumably they use the same random number generator as powers the quote machine.
