Wouldn't normally link in this way, but this is a remarkable build thread. !!!!

You'll need a login etc, but trust me, if you like engineering, this is for you

I'm not registering just for one build thread but I do have a soft spot for those old GS based XR69s.
If I remember right they had a two valves per pot and a twinplug per pot?

I read somewhere that there are more XR69s in existence than were actually built ;)

That wouldn't actually make this particular build any less impressive. If he says it's an XR69 based upon the thread i'd be inclined to believe him.

No, I wasn't putting it down or anything. It's just a standing joke from the Manx Classic GP

That's got a Bandit or GSXR engine, XR69s had GS1000 engines, amongst other things the engine mounting points are different, so the frame isn't an XR69 one, the engine is also very different to ride than a GS1000 one.

I don't care if people want to build Harris framed Bandit engine bikes, but calling them XR69s is total bollocks, and to race them in a classic race is utter crap, you might as well use an R1

That's what I alluded to above.

It does make a bit of a mockery of it, IMHO.

A guy I know spends a huge amount of time and his own dosh getting a couple of Ducati 888ish bikes there knowing he's got no chance of his riders beating Dunlop on one of them. Not allowed to put a 1190R engine in.

Likewise the Kwakas, they struggle to get anywhere, why aren't they allowed to run ZX10 engines?

There's always been a fair bit of 'interpretation' of the rules in bike racing but for me this is just a step too far.

Indeed, it's not as though GS1000 engines or the race parts for them are difficult to get hold of, it means anyone with a Kawasaki or Honda engined bike is uncompetitive, Honda probably won more F1 TTs than anyone, the RS1000 was very competitive in the early 80s and most of the field ran Kawasaki engines back then because they are stronger than Suzuki engines (the gearbox isn't as nice though)

It also means the later WSB based bikes stand no chance, which is a shame as Foggy's near 125mph lap on an OW01 was the fastest lap for years.
