Dead Laptop

Post by Yorick »

Bollox. Me trusty old Toshiba lappy died overnight. Left it to reboot after Windows updates and this morning, nada :(

Charger shows a light, but no light or power on the lappy :(

Gonna nip round to a pal's later to try his charger.

IIRC they have an internal power supply/whatever but can't remember what it's called. Is that a likely problem?

If it's FUBAR can I get data off? Some important stuff :(

TIA.

How old is it?

If it's got a removable battery, take it out and try powering it up with the PSU attached.

Try leaving it with the battery removed for a few hours.

If it's got a 2.5inch drive with a SATA connector you can slot it into a cheap USB caddy to get the data off (depending on if it's encrypted).

If it wasn't for the whole covid thing, I would have come and set it on fire for only £500 plus expenses.

It's probably the charging port that's died, I think we had a Toshiba do this - a replacement port isn't expensive, but it's an utter barstard to get to.

Well, tried to get the back off as KFC suggested, but it wasn't playing.
So Googled Toshiba battery and found a reset option. Press power button 20 seconds then plug in the mains cable.
Well, power magically happened. It's now installing the updates.

I'm whizzing down to buy a 1Tb drive to back up all the data before it dies again.
Thanks for the help :)

Remember you can stick it all on the cloud too with something like Google Drive or M$ OneDrive.

You'll not want to be paying Google or MS what it would cost to back up 800gb to the cloud :geek:

I'm guessing 90% at least of that is music and or movies.

Don't put them on the cloud, only the really important stuff. You get 15gb on Google Drive gratis.
