Private Number Plate Advice

Post by Craigyboy9 »

Ladies and Gents,

I’m looking for a wee bit of advice regarding a private plate being taken off the other half’s car. Here’s the back ground, it’s new to me because I’ve never had one.

She bought the car brand new, so when she picked it up the dealer changed her plate from her old car to this car.

Now we’re trading it in for a used car, so we need to take the plate off, but I have no idea if it ever had a registration number assigned to it before the private plate when on. The dealer that sold it to us said it never had one.

So the question is...
If I take the plate off online, will they advise me immediately of the new number, or will we have to wait for the new v5c coming through the post before I can get plates made and the insurance changed over?

I’ve searched the dvla website, but it’s unclear.

Any help will be appreciated

You get a new age related registration from the DVLA, this is what happened when we bought a one owner car that had a private plate

But when? Right away online or will I need to wait on the post?

Give them a call or web chat Craig. You need a Retention Certificate for the ‘Cherished Number’ (V778). You should be able to do it on line. They will tell you the previous number assuming it is all in order.

Tel: 0300 790 6802 or Web Chat.

Early morning is best i.e. 08:00

If you do it on line, you get an email from DVLA which includes the replacement number and a letter of authorisation from them which you take to get the new plates made up. Very quick, efficient and straightforward.
