With a hard drive mounted externally via an external dock, how can I interrogate the event log from this HDD which has a windows 7 os on it?

No that's not what I meant.

It's in a hard drive dock connected to another PC. So what I meant was, is there a way I can view the event logs? Is there a file somewhere which contains the logs/error messages?

C:\Windows\System32\winevt\Logs is where they should be on the other machine.

I think unless you've exported/saved them you can only use the eventvwr mmc snap-in to view another Windows computer system logs if the OS is loaded - i.e. remotely connect to another running PC.

Thanks chaps. It's a bit of an odd one as it's a system which runs over two disks (not raid).

I think its the second hard drive which has failed. I did a windows check disk on it and it stopped going any further at a certain point and stayed like that for about a day. Then I used a disk utility from WD and it found bad sectors.

Although there were bad sectors, I managed to copy the contents over to a new drive and that's sorted the problem out, now the PC boots and runs fine, much quicker too.

The other issue I'd like to sort out though, is some time ago after windows update, the computer takes ages to actually load the windows environment. Getting to the log in screen is quick, but once the credentials are entered, it takes a while.

I've disabled a load of startup items in msconfig, so I wonder what else I could take a look at?
